Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

The title on this one got me, here's the story. So while I was out riding around after work today something happened that made me lol just a little. I was on my 84 raleigh olympian which is not currently setup fixed gear, i've got a 1x8 setup on it now. It's got some double straps and some chopped risers bars and looks rather "fixie-ish" if you will. Anyway, I cut through a local strip mall on the way back to my house and as I passed by the Target, some dude coming out was like "whoa look at that fixie". As soon as I heard that I stopped pedaling and began to coast. No sooner do I start coasting and the dude then goes "aawww no it's not" and you could totally hear the disappointment in his voice. I let out a laugh and continued on my way. Some people are to funny. Sweet fixie, bro. lol

if you can't look at a bike and realize it's not a fixie by the rear derailleur, you deserve disappointment.

hahaha, Tzzzzz. i think i'm going to start making that noise when i slow down on my fixed gear.

I didn't see anything in Dan's story that would imply he had an IGH.

I rode on a group bike ride (with an almost entirely female bike club which was sweet), and they all assumed I was riding fixed gear on my 2x9 until we finished the ride. lol

They were all on their commuter bikes, so half were road bikes with fenders and racks, the other mountain bikes with slick tires and mustache bars and stuff.

When I am on my road bike people usually assume I am riding a fixed gear because of how slow I am.

He probably has one of those ramps they use at the start of time trials in the TdF. Good luck stopping that freight train once it gets going, though.

Not really. Actually that chainring is a pretty rare bird. I've only seen a Shimano Olympic twice since 2004.

I found the Japanese site with them last year. I was tempted to order some. But, I passed.

I don't know of any knock-offs that exist (like the vintage campy). I do know that authentic ones are around here and there.

By definition, the verb "race" means "competition", as in "compete in a race" If you are there just "for the experience," then you are not "racing", you are "participating." Some people participate in events like marathons, but only a few are there racing in competition for meaningful results. Many people ride their track bikes on a velodrome for exercise or fun, which is fine and dandy, but they are not racing.

Riding around in DC, I got cut off and almost hit by a guy in a Ferrari.

On this bike? Might have seemed more fitting.
