Kind of seems like they did this on purpose. I want to see this person's other bikes before making a call.

And the fact that it's a Republic bike.

Well you don't put that many reflectors on your bike by accident.

That one was so dumb that I wanted to ride it to the other end of the quad, just to teach the cyclist a lesson. If the recycling center actually paid out for aluminum up here, I could make a killing stealing Magnas and Trailmasters from the campus alone.

Well what's the theft like in Alaska? I was looking at the Bikes in Japan thread where bike theft is a lot more uncommon and a jack lock job would be overkill in some places in Japan. My bro-in-law leaves his $1000 Surly right outside his apartment door unlocked, just leaning against the wall. I wouldn't even consider leaving that bike anywhere here, even with two u-locks.

So I don't really have much to add to the conversation. I like SSFG, I think it's the funniest forum on BF and usually has the prettiest bikes, so I lurk here pretty much daily. But I've never ridden fixed and am in no way interested in SS, so I don't really have a lot to say here.

If you leave your bike unlocked, it probably won't be there when you get back. Through the summer there are stolen bike posts on Craigslist about once a week, but most of them are garage burglaries or folks who just left it unlocked for a few minutes while running into a store. We're no where near the theft level of NY or SF or other major cities in the lower 48, but that's because the stolen bike market is underdeveloped, not because we're more honest. The chain lock on my main bike is way overkill for Anchorage, but I it use just in case someone decides to step up their theft game.

There are plenty people who frequent this forum that aren't SS/FG. Carleton only rides track bikes on a track. Some people on here used to ride SS/FG but just don't anymore, and we're wayyyy to friendly/awesome/handsome to leave.
At any rate, it's good to have you here. Your bike is not jackass. Would ride, especially in those conditions.

Dude is saying this is a 59cm Leader 725tr, and that he's 6'5". I know everyone is built differently, but I'm 6"4" on a 58cm with half that amount of post and similar bars. Also, doesn't Leader do even sizes? To me, that thing just seems too small to be a 59...

The frame is a $100 ebay special, chinese manufacturer (lightweight, rides nice, and I wont cry if I wad it up). I have the black one in "59cm" and it measures barely 59 to the tip top of the seat post clamp. As a 6'4" lanky guy, I have about 14cm of exposed seat post. That guy must be all legs, or cant reach the pedals.

Do people ride nice bikes up there? Sounds like a good plot to develop in a novel. A detective breaking a burglary ring where the thieves steal bikes from Alaska to sell in Washington, Oregon or Canada. I'm writing this in my notes.

Fixed. When I was up there, the scrappers were brutal. Like, would break into seasonal homes and tear all the pipes out of the walls, tear copper out of heavy equipment, etc. Was in a very rural area, but if it wasn't bolted down and nobody was around, they would take anything that could fetch a dollar.

Dang, for some reason I thought Alaska was a peaceful place. That sounds crazy.

You've watched too much Northern Exposure (which was an awesome, if inaccurate, show, so I don't blame you). Drug abuse, alcohol abuse, sexual assault (r@pe is a banned word?), domestic violence, suicide, all above the national average (our suicide rates are through the freakin' roof; 4x the national average for the average Alaskan, for natives between 18-25 years old it's something like 26x the national average). It gets very cold, very dark, and a lot of people don't deal well (the native population has other issues, like crazy high rates of drug and alcohol dependency, and all the crap that comes with that). Plus we get a bunch of loonies and thugs trying to escape "society" or "the Man" or whatever.

You see some nice bikes up here, but the majority are department store rigs or lower end bike shop mountain bikes. I've seen some really nice road bikes, but only under people as they ride, or on car racks on the road. In the winter there's an ever growing number of fat bikes, which can be spendy depending on the build, but whenever I see one locked to a rack (there are a few regulars at the university), it's locked with a chain or U-lock.

I'm glad you chimed back in. I wanted to say some of that but didn't want to trash-talk your place. It's crazy how the crime rates are in Alaska.
