i buy small things from the LBS but I honestly can't afford to buy new **** at full price.

For my new build I bought 3 things new.

Protype BB, Chainring bolts, KMC chain.

Things I bought online or used.

Sugino 75s, Full carbon fork for 70 Shipped, Headset for $10, and so fourth. Probably have to pick up a star nut at the LBS for the fork this weekend.

heh I don't need 10, but if it drops them down to $2/per I can live with having a few extras. $20 is basically 3 tubes at my lbs

I try to get little things from my LBS, tools, bolts, chainrings, tires, tubes etc. because they tend to be cheaper there, but I bought my frame and wheelset and stuff online because A. Selection was better for what I wanted and B. The pricing for what I wanted was better online.

That being said I love my LBS, they're good people. Unfortunately they're connected to a hardware store that's run by people who are kind of ******y :/

Not at all, don't feel bad about it. Have never found prices comparable to ordering my own, parts stock typically sucks. Really no mechanical work they can do that I can't.

I don't support my local car dealers or mechanics either. If someone else can do it you should be able to as well.

Ha sorry man. But I'm a mechanic at a marina, and my dad paid for a second house fixing saabs and volvos after his 9 to 5, so not knocking mechs at all. I just have this aversion to paying someone to do something I could theoretically do myself.

Although my forays into plumbing have been mostly a disaster...

Working at the co-op has shown me just how many people can't be trusted to figure things out with their own two hands.

True mechanical sensibility is completely absent to a lot of people... but bike's are just so damn simple. With a little guidance/instruction just about anyone can change a headset etc. Plus its not your bike right...

As a general rule of thumb I should not be trusted with anything that fragile, powerful or dangerous. I'm giddy and curious as a 2 year old.

It's my job there to teach them. A lot of people get it and I feel like others will do their thing and then go the lbs the next day

All depends on what I'm buying. New tire? Cog? Tube? LBS. Wheelset? Online.

Recently I've supported them way too much. I'm pretty broke now though... But they do live like 30 seconds away... They always match my prices.

I go to 4 shops. 2 chain stores, 2 privately owned business. Overall the employees in all 4 four places are very nice peoples. It feels good going to the shop and talk some smack with peeps. I learn a ton in the process.

1. Look at product online for reviews, specs and price.
2. Go to LBS and see if they have it
3. If it isn't way more expensive, I'll get it. If they have to order it, it's usually as cheap as online because they don't charge me shipping if I wait for their next parts order so I get it from them.
4. If LBS is way too expensive or can't order it, I'll get it online.
I agree completely. Last week I had a buddy stop buy Brownells to pick me up a couple of cans of Boeshield 12 oz. Price was cheaper than the local shop was charging for the 8 oz containers. Otherwise, most of my re-furbished Schwinn parts came from the local shop.

I don't. I got swindled since I did ZERO research before buying my first bike in 12 years and paid 360 for a freakin draft lite. Thank God for this website and bikesdirect.

I don't bother with my LBS unless its absolutely necessary. They are doing just fine selling bikes and parts at way above retail prices without my support.

I have been in shops run by great people that I would be willing to support, but none close enough for me to consider an LBS. I have, on occasion, mail-ordered stuff from shops that are less than 20 miles away from me. With free shipping, why not..support the LBS and UPS at the same time.

My LBS is a monopoly, being that the nearest competitor is 30 miles away. They act like it.
They haven't a clue what good service is, nor do they seem interested in learning.

Every time I've gone in, it's like I'm not even there.
When I want to spend money, I'm told I can't do that.
When I went to look at a new bike, they said, "Okay, let us know what you want." Then they walked away.
When I looked at something used because of new price shock, they walked away.
Sometimes they just look at me and tell me they're going on vacation.

" Wa'DAHELL?!"

Sooo, I don't go there.
Interestingly, they get "Bike Shop" of the year from the local newspaper. They are the only game in town, though, so it's a shallow victory.

Does your shop offer lifetime free service/ labor for the bikes sold there? It would usually say on a sticker they put on the bike they sold you; usually has their name and the words "do not remove". Usually that's worth the markup the first time around.

I love buying stuff at my lbs now that they have a coffee shop and when you spend over $10 you get a free coffee! Great excuse for the misses and I to get coffee and me get bike parts
