100 fixed

How many of you have done a century on a fixed gear? I just did it for the second time sat. It was scary at times going down those hills.

I was going to early this summer, but my training partner didn't realize that it was a serious thing, so it didn't happen. I did however complete a metric one evening. It wasn't too bad other than the fact that I'm prone to exercise induced hematuria and I had some seriously incapacitating muscle cramps too.

Chicago to Milwaukee, during the Ides Ride...loved it...only a couple gnarly hills, in the North Chicago burbs...in fact, there were about 20 or 30 of us the whole way up there, mostly on track bikes...not fixed gears, TRACK bikes...

i'd like to do it, but around here, it's pretty hard to find a century ride that doesn't include some nasty hill that takes a half hour to get up on a road bike...and then going down wouldn't be very much fun for my knees. i'd definitely pack a brake or two if i was to do one here.

my knees and lower back are killin' me lately.

I did the Santa Fe Century in Gainesville, FL. It wasn't all that bad other than the downhills. I'm not quite brave enough to try skidding, or skipping, whatever it's called.

I rode to Los Angeles from San Francisco on mine, but I used a brake.

Riding fixed makes you a better lover.

did the NYC century back in september - i believe there was a thread here about it. i think i saw about 5 other track bikes in the crowd... it was a nice touch that the route took us through the recently re-finished velodrome in queens.

yup. and I wasn't the only one. There were definitely
a few of us there including Team Shiftless who
had cool jerseys with derailers with x's through 'em.

I did my first century ever last Saturday on fixed. I'm apparently a good planner: 100.66 miles. I didn't leave town to do it but did 8 laps of a local bike path plus a trip to the hardware store to replace a very tired seatpost bolt. Like an idiot I got up Sunday morning and did another one, but on a multi-speed bike. It was quite the death-march at the end, but 230 miles in a weekend definitely tops the 90 or so maximum I'd done prior to that. There's not much time left up North for pleasant riding, so I'm cramming the miles in while I can.

Anyone know of a non-hilly metric in the bay area? I would like to try a couple to train for a century fixed.

I dream of doing the aids ride/ lifecycle ride from SF to LA on a fixed.

Bikes: Various by application

I did one a few years back in Texas, an (not so)organized ride to see if we could put a team together to raise more $$ for the MS ride. Nothing came of it cept that me n a few buds rode fixed and kept up just fine. None of us ended up doing the MS150 that year though
all flats, no hills at all cept one bridge. Flat as...anything flat, great rides for fixed if you can get out of the city
