Yes, I have used the search function. I have gathered quite a lot of information, but I'd like some help deciphering and interpreting it.

I'm looking for a low-profile wheelset that is as light as possible. However, I'm only looking to spend around $200 (definitely not more than $250) for the wheelset. I did some research and I was disappointed to find that the Mavic CXP22s are hardly lighter than the Velocity Deep Vs. I know there are the Open Pros, Aeroheads, CXP33s and numerous other light wheels out there, but they are all above my budget. Are the CXP22's really the lightest I can get for the price? I may be able to secure a set for $160. I only weigh 120lbs so sturdiness isn't really a concern.

Not sure if this plays a part, but I'm looking for an all black wheelset.

i have some of these wabi wheels. they are really great.
hard pressed to tell the diff between on the bike between these and my mavic open pro/dura-ace setup

I have CXP21s which were made in 1997 or so. The braking surface of the rear is finally dying and so is the RX-100 read hub. I would buy the 22s based on my experience with the 21s. I have not looked at Wabi. There is also Bicycle Wheel Warehouse. I have not used the wheels, they seem to have a following on other boards. The biggest problem I have read about them is communication. Some people have problems with them and some don't.

I have heard great things about the Wabis. Otherwise I don't know hat you'll find. if you can stretch the budget a little built, what about Velocity Aeroheads or A23s to Formulas, with DT comp spokes. That's about 120 for the rims, 50 for the spokes, and 50 for the hubs, so 220. That's excluding the labor though, which most shops would charge at least 15 per wheel for. if you do it yourself it's just a little above your budget though. And you could cheap out on the spokes too, or maybe find some other road rims on clearance for ~40 each.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone! I have heard the name "kinlin" thrown around, but I haven't been able to find them as commonly as say, Mavic or Velocity. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Also, Wabi advertises their wheelset to be 1750g. Does anyone know what the CXP22's will be around?

CXP22s are 525g per rim. Velocity Deep Vs are 580g per rim. That would make the CXP22s about 0.25lb lighter than a comparable Deep V set. If you can find out how much a Deep V set weighs, then you have your answer.

Kinlins XR270s are not exactly low profile, but they're still lighter than CXP22s at ~450g per rim.

IRO is currently having a sale on their Cold Fusion rims, which are said to be rebranded Velocity Fusions. If this is indeed the case, they have a 25mm depth with a reported weight of 480g. Buying their hubs and rims together will definitely give you a great, low priced wheelset, even if you got it professionally assembled.

Wow! Do you think the Iro Cold Fusions are as light as their Velocity counterparts? If so, would the "Standard Wheels" at their page here be lighter than the CXP22/Deep V's? I'd be willing to pay $200 for that.

I could not imagine the IRO fusion rims to be as light...But I bet they would work great for what you want... If you want a lightweight wheelset, you have to build it yourself, using good quality spokes... DT Champ's=heavy, DT Comp's=big improvement

Hm... okay looks like I'm better off ordering their rims and building from there then? Are their hubs any good? Quite a steal at $20 (Too bad there's no black hub). Two rims, two hubs comes to $89 shipped.

So I'll have to order Dt Competitions and black nipples separately. If I took this path, would I have a wheelset lighter than the CXP22's?

Yes, their hubs are good...I can't say much for their rims because I haven't gotten a chance to use them, though at $15 they do seem very tempting. Go for it, and report back!

Hm... the hubs look kinda heavy, though. Maybe I should just go with the $150 CXP22's and save myself the money and the hassle

Say if I went with these rims, one Iro hub, a front road hub, DT Comps, and some double-butted spokes, would it be that much lighter than the 22's?

XR-200 is always going to be under 390g and $55.00 each.
I wouldn't recommend the 32h XR-200 for anyone over 60kg, however.

IMO, you're better off buying a CXP33 or XR-270, because they're sturdier, while only slightly heavier.

$200 price point is a bit tough, but if you use some DT comp in 1.8/1.6/1.8, then they will be a bit lighter than the 2.0/1.8/2.0 DT comp spokes.

if you want a light weight novatec road hub and lightish rear track hub, you can buy them from bdop.

CXP22 are heavy. but they are durable.

WOW a rim below 400g? That's pretty mindblowing to me! I'm not sure if I'd want to buy those rims, as I tend to treat my bikes a little bit harshly, but that's still really amazing. Thanks for the specific info, AEO, I'll definitely take a look!

If it helps at all, a heavier hub is not as noticeable as heavier rims. If you consider two wheelsets weighing the same, one with super light hubs and mediocre rims and one with heavier hubs and light rims, the light rimmed ones will feel much lighter riding. So you can get a light wheelset effect on a budget just by getting some well built not so light hubs and light rims. Decent spokes always though.

Just in case you are still considering them, the Iro Wheelset is 980g(front) and 1044g(back) according to them.

Edit: Whoa. These rims are claimed to be 480g, and it's only $100 for the wheelset. What do you guys think?

If they really are rebranded Velocity's then they are good rims. I have a wheel built with a Fusion rim and it's a very solid nice looking wheel. Basically a 25mm (vs 30mm) Deep V. Falls in the middle weight wise of their Deep V and something like an open pro/sun rim, 520g/470g/435g respectively.

it's lighter than the posted wabi and probably within your price range when performance has discounts and stuff. i'm 140lbs so having less spokes/less bulletproof wheel is not a big deal for me.
