I really want to go on a ride with jdgesus and cc700 because the live in Seattle too and seem like fun to ride with but I'm embarrassed since I currently ride a conversion I've somewhat decked out but it's still kinda ugly since I don't have enough to buy the Steamroller frame I've been eyeing even though once I get the frame I can build it up immediately with the parts I have

confession: that is a big ass sentence.

I like my road bike better. And it's not even fast. It's not a "roadie". It's old, steel, has Biopace rings, and I set it up for friction shifting only. And it's soooo sweet.

Man, **** friction shifting. If you like those you are a better man than I am.

Confession: I'm too big of a puss to flip my wheel over and have it fixed.

It's really no big deal. You're psyching yourself out. Just do it.

I <3 friction. It gives me a more relaxed "in-tune" feeling when riding, and minimizes shifting itself so I can HTFU more. I have to choose my gear wisely because I know I'm not going to reach down and shift again while I'm going up that hill. If I wanted a race bike, sure I'd go for indexing and brifters, but that is not my goal at all. I also <3 the ease of maintenance. Tighten cables once a year and never have to go to the shop for a tune-up. It's simple enough to do all the work on my own, in my spare time.

I mostly want to get my touring bike rolling just because I will have friction shifting again after 3 years without. Sometimes I ride my girlfriend's townie because of the friction shifting

That said, next time I ride a bike with friction shifting I will have a more open mind.

It's just a different feel that is refreshing once in a while. It's like riding a fixed gear bike when you ride a road bike mostly

Confession: I have no idea what you mean by friction shifting. Is this just shifting without the indexing?

Yerp. No clicks, just a smooth motion as you "find" the gears. I dig it on old bikes too.

I really really really thought I was too, then my freewheel was being too noisy and annoying me so I flipped it. It's easy, really. This morning I rode my geared bike to work and coasting felt weeeeiiiird. My favorite trick is how to spin your pedal back up to the right position at a stop light, without lifting the back of your bike with your hand.

That said...

Confession: I think I want to try cyclocross which means easing up on the fixed gear mileage and getting back onto my geared bike.

Thanks sqrl. The more I pay attention to it, the more I realize how much I coast on my ride into work :| I really just need to flip the hub over the weekend and take it on a few test rides.
