I rode 68 miles at a snail's pace for an out of shape friend. 68 miles at 17.9mph.

Today I:

Cinelli kaleidoscope bar tape by miss_kaz, on Flickr

Also worked on getting my old hybrid ready to sell. It's in decent shape now, but I'm at a crossroads: the rear derailleur is not working all that well, and the only way to really fix it is to replace the cable and barrel adjuster (the cable is rusty and the barrel adjuster in particular is rusted stuck). The question is whether it's worth the money, time, and hassle. It'll be the first time I've ever replaced derailleur cables - a good learning experience, sure, but maybe not necessary right now... I'll be selling it on craigslist and given it's a hybrid with a step-through frame, probably to a casual cyclist. Will I make the money back if I buy new cable+housing ($30) and a new barrel adjuster ($5-10)?

As it stands it shifts ok, just some of them are a little picky and it doesn't want to go to the smallest cog of the 8-speed cassette. The front derailleur is in good enough shape that I think I can adjust it without replacing anything, though I haven't tried. I just put a brand new chain on it because the old one was completely destroyed.

I must say, between my fancy Lezyne floor pump with the screw-on chuck and my new Kool Stop bead jack, replacing the tires (I had old studded tires on it for winter riding) was positively civilized.

That tape is some good stuff. Very stylish while being comfortable as well with a good amount of grippiness. :thumb:

Today I rode bike with the group (as usual on Saturdays) and came home to some new parts in the mail and a mail - in rebate that took 3 months. Free money! :D

It is too slow.

Last year we would do 70 mile tempo rides at over 21mph average. This year he was struggling to hold my wheel at a brisk pace.

RGNY 03-16-13 06:07 PM

sold off my old beach cruiser, a Jamis Sputnik frame, and an '80 Raleigh Gran Sport someone gave me that was too big.

bought the Nashbar "Famous Maker with 105" road bike. been wanting a basic roadie for about a year and everything just came together now.

caught up with old friends and was able to help them through some personal drama.

For the record, the DIY disc brake and the hub motor weren't my idea, nor my doing. Little scary to think about a fork failure 5 feet up.

hockeyteeth 03-16-13 07:34 PM

Next time keep the fork on the top bike, cut the fork blades off at the crown, and weld a piece of steel to the bottom of the steerer tube in order to link top and bottom steerer tubes. I did the same thing as you on my tall bike a while back and not having a headset on the top bike made the steering and handling really terrible. Also, I bet putting the smaller wheel and effectively steepening the head tube angle makes it handle poorly. Otherwise, looks like fun.

IthaDan 03-16-13 07:38 PM

There is a headset on the top bike. Top cup of top bike, bottom cup of bottom bike. Would be nice to have two full headsets.

The small wheel is an electric motor. Again, not my idea.

Today I rode.... Two miles to the bar... Two miles home.

Noice.

Today I finally got my Shogun on the road with no mechanical issues, and bro'd down with Jandro for a bit.

Mumonkan 03-16-13 09:41 PM

today i finally experienced medieval times, i enjoyed the **** out of it.

why cant jousting and melee weapon fighting be the national sport and not football?
it would actually be a lot easier to watch and get into than a bunch of spandexed dudes jumping on each other so they can touch balls.

That may be the greatest thing ever posted on this forum.

At least in cycling the spandexed dudes are trying to avoid jumping on each other and touching balls.

Today I Went to check out the Land Park Crit in downtown Sacramento. It was cool. One of the mash sf dude's was there Rainier Schaefer in the pro 1/2 race. I'm not sure were he placed but his team won the race. Was any of the bf guys there?

well, there is a world league, the Battle of Nations. i have two friends on Team USA. best part is that it's not choreographed like Medieval Times, basically team submission fights. the upcoming champs is in France.

i've been doing SCA for about 20 years. not as hardcore, but here's a knockout i managed. :)

in our larger battles we can field up to about 1000 on each side.

RGNY 03-17-13 04:26 AM

oops, forgot jousting. the world champs is the Tournament of the Phoenix. solid lances, vs balsa-tipped breakaways you'd use when you have to do two shows a night.

my buddy makes fun of me for only doing foot combat: "yeah, melee is fine, but there's nothing like ripping a guy out of a saddle at full gallop."

Mumonkan 03-17-13 04:53 AM

That is indeed awesome, i just wish it was as popular as this other trash everyone else gets all fired up about

I know what ill be watching tonight, haha

agreed. and fyi, your local SCA group has fight practices in Willowbrook Park in good weather, if you ever want to get in armor and beat on people. :)

Doubly awesome, i cut through there every morning on my way to work!

Dabbling Runner 03-17-13 08:25 AM

When I was a kid, we did this on bikes with wiffle bats. Not jousting but like swords, like this...

Had a great time at the bar/party last night with friends. Had some pretty good beer for free, too. Three days down, one left. Today is going to be insane.

Mumonkan 03-17-13 09:23 AM

Today ive finally decided to make mead, anybody got good online sources for brewing supplies?

or know of any in the tri-state area?

SpeshulEd 03-17-13 10:03 AM

Today is St. Pats! I think I'm going to go put an hour in on the bike and then come home and drink Guinness all day.
