It can be tough unless you have a really good shop to hit up and fit the right BB. It's hard to guess how different spindle length is gonna change your chainline, even with same make/model BB sometimes when your ordering online, for instance.
Ideally the difference would be half of spindle length increase, but not always. |
I don't know anything about spindles/drivetrains, but would it be possible to swap out to a longer rear axle, run a spacer and then run a longer spindle to get clearance?
Just spitballin'. |
those gxp s300's should have supplied spacer rings that go inbetween the cups and the bb shell. throw those on(or get some more) and it will move your chainline out but the millimeter or three of clearance you gain will be worth any slight(read: barely perceptible) chainline issue it causes.
same deal with my ftp. spacers work wonders, its IMO one of the best advantages of the external bb design. |
Would the change in chainline be noticeable when riding? Noise?
|
Tonight I am putting off an exam cram by reading bikesnobnyc's book. I just got to his chapter entitled "Why is everyone trying kill me?". His contempt for dumb drivers is awesome and impressive at the same time.
Roaming around the countryside in bloated vehicles while masticating food and communicating via a series of monotone bleats really makes us no better than livestock." |
picked up Bellwether thermal jacket/knickers. i -will- lower my riding temp window.....HTFU.....
turned in my gun/badge as ordered and had to sit through a meeting about new duties under the job title rewrite. whee! fun! :/ |

This sounds really weird. I've see full Omniums on Kageros and everything is thick as can be on those

Those spacers are supplied with all GXP BBs - regardless of what crankset they come with - to be used in the event of pairing MTB cranksets (which typically have longer integrated spindles than road/track cranksets) with a frame having a 68mm shell. Adding two 2.5mm spacers instantly turns a 68mm shell into a 73mm shell, allowing you to use MTB cranks. Trust me, I have spoken with SRAM about this. |

That's a good idea. A BB with a longer spindle would let it clear.

Could it be that you bolt the chainring on to the outside of omnium's spider but the inside of the s300's? But with all else being equal, then wouldn't the chainlines be different?
|
sigh.
|
actually...dddavid is right in that any pic of omnumnums shows the ring on the outside while all pics of s300s (with 1 ring) have it on the inside. if it was my problem i would consider putting the ring on the outside myself but for the fact it will throw the chainline off so much.
ddeadserious...unfortunately for you, your problem demonstrates one of the potential problems with using road cranks for ss/fg. fyi...velosolo rings do come 3/32. unless he wants to use this as a reason to get nicer cranks... Scrod, why don't you order one & exchange with the poor guy? |

^^^ooops...you are absolutely correct that ddeadserious could not have put his ring on the outside, i forgot there is a single ring specific s300
should have known you would take care of him so all comments on how to solve his problem are moot keep up the good work... (i do, however, wish you would carry 130 velosolo rings in 3/32) |
We plan on it but VeloSolo makes them in small batches and haven't restocked them yet.
|
id have to make an order if you have their bolt on cogs.
|
 It's all good guys, Scrod and I had already established there wasn't a solution, I was just bumming about it. I've always hated the stock S300 chainring. Appreciate the brainstorming though.

Today I was running late and my front tire just conveniently happened to be flat. I was just about to grab my roadie off the rack when I had the random idea of taking my wife's via condotti instead; after all it was on the bottom rack.
Aside from the porteur bars hitting my calf on turns, feeling a bit cramped with my wife's fit, and the women's brooks, the ride to and from work awesome; the joys a more upright riding position can do. And did I mention how awesome skidding is with townie bars? |
