It's the angle of that pic. I've got as 60mm stem which is plenty long enough for a 42mm deep rim as seen here:

The big logo is definitely the icing on the cake. Hot rod style.

That's a decent price for DP18s with free shipping. Bell's is awesome. If you're going with a 30mm rim, any 42-48mm presta stem will work.

One is heavy and the other one weighs more.

They do look great.

Steel bead will be more difficult to install/remove. Folding bead will be a little more user friendly.

Not sure what tires you're using but I generally find the exact opposite to be true.

It depends on rim/tire combo. Folding specialized armadillos on Mavic CXP23's are a pain, but maxxis dth folding on a sun mtx 33 rim is stupidly easy. Hardest I've had was a 3 ply wire bead 26x2.7 Intense tire to a mavic EX729.

That being said, I won't even consider thickslicks anymore, nothing but trouble here.

since someone else necromanced this thread (so i assume i don't lose cool points for commenting now), i would just like to say:
-scrod's pic with dat tire in dat seattube cutout=sexxay (way too many bikes with a giant gap between the aero cutout and the tire... if you have it, use it, right?)
-i can't stop loving the giant logo on thickslicks.
-Hson formation face seems to have fallen out of favor since 2011, but i still vote Yes on those.

I've never used a folding road tire, so maybe thats it. On my BMX bike, I can practically pull my front tire off with one hand, while the rear with a steel bead might take a tire lever.

how much larger are thickslick 25c's compared to a standard 23c and which type of thickslick are you running scrod, universal cycles has three different models.

I'm not using Thickslicks at all. That pic is nearly two years old.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but before I bought a superior bike I tested an SE Lager which comes with Thick Slicks on it and I really liked them.

What is the current thinking on them? Are there similar alternatives to consider?

Its weird, I got a set of continental Ultra Sports from an LBS(I was on vacation and in a bind, didn't have time to do my normal research). I got home to discover they have some pretty piss-poor reviews. I've ridden them for about a year now and have had no issues - tires can be funny like that i guess?

I'm going to replace them with a set of Randoneurs this spring, maybe I'll realize what I've been missing out on the whole time - but other than a little harsh of a ride, I can't complain for the price I paid for them.

I had some Ultra Sports for a while, they are now on someone else's bike. I've had no issues with them and even though they have poor reviews, unless there is some bizarre freak accident, it all depends on where you ride. If you're riding Conti Ultra Sports on normal roads that is generally free of most debris, they will last you as long as any other tire of the same price.

As for Thickslicks, I've seen many people with them (including people on this forum), they are for the most part fine and a pretty good deal, I think.

Thickslicks are decent. They look cool and in my experience with the Urban Elite model, are very durable. They're also as heavy as lead-filled moose balls.
