yeah I could do that, but I don't really need them. I kinda like having a cheaper wheelset on the pixie blue (Sun M13 II / Formula) and a wabi set on the other 722, and just got a set for the Mash, so one of them would just be sitting around.

any ideas on the $ he should toss in? I know deep rims and track drops aren't cool on bfssfg anymore, but they're not total throwaways :p

Scrodzilla 01-07-12 07:35 PM

Who cares what's "cool"? The Velocity Deep V is one of my favorite rims.

hamfoh 01-07-12 07:46 PM

oh I was joking, but I meant the H+Son, not the Deep Vs.

I see you can get his wheels with DT Swiss spokes for $350 brand new on velomine, but he seems to think they're worth closer to $500 new. meanwhile my hubs run about $350 alone. he thought $50 + him driving to me was worth it, but I told him, I don't need them, so him driving means nothing to me :/

striknein 01-07-12 08:07 PM

I thought all velomine wheels had straight gauge spokes?

hamfoh 01-07-12 08:09 PM

most of them

Nagrom_ 01-09-12 11:18 PM

so... I'm overhauling this old Suzue Promax hub, I don't like the bearing balls in them, pitted and really bad quality. The bearing balls that are in it are 5mm. I have new ceramic 3/16" laying around. So, my question is: Do you think the size difference would be a problem? do note that I plan to change all of them, and not just swap the ugly ones, so the size would be uniform.

5mm = .0196850394 inches
3/16" = 0.1875 inches

oh sorry.. obligitory "should I?": should I?

hamfoh 01-10-12 12:23 AM

should I go full townie with the pixie blue pista and get fenders and a basket and some swanky VO bars

Nagrom_ 01-10-12 12:26 AM

yes, no basket.

Shouldn't be an issue. It's not likely that the "5mm" bearings were precisely that size anyway.

Why "5mm" and not 5mm? Quotes throw me off...

Racks on Racks on Racks on...

In all seriousness, get a rack.

hamfoh 01-11-12 12:03 AM

anyone have any recommendations for sturdy fenders and racks for a frame/fork without eyelets

hairnet 01-11-12 03:17 AM

Axiom makes a rack that works on bikes without mounts. there are p-clamp mounting fenders, not sure which brand makes them

GMJ 01-11-12 03:43 AM

Also about to be shopping around for racks and fenders. I've been wanting to build a winter beater/commuter.

http://stlouis.craigslist.org/bik/2792385547.html

The guy is practically a neighbor. I can probably get him to go lower. Would it be worth it? The thing felt like it fit me great.

djsfix 01-11-12 03:53 AM

For my first FG should I buy the Mercier Kilo TT or WT OR should I go with a Windsor Clockwork or The Hour?

I've been reading all over trying to get a definitive answer and I can't seem to get an answer as to which one's a better choice.

I'll be using my bike to commute to and from work around 30 miles round trip plus wherever else I plan on going.

What are your thoughts amigos

GMJ 01-11-12 03:57 AM

Obligatory Kilo TT.

I'd go Stripper.

Stezzy 01-11-12 04:00 AM

i have a windsor "the hour" ridden over 1500 miles still going strong. replaced the pedals and recently the wheelset. also i added a front break. but i did these upgrades gradually over a couple months. my friend got a kilo tt its pretty decent too.

hamfoh 01-11-12 04:12 AM

http://store.velo-orange.com/index.p...ttachment.html ?

now to figure out my size for the clamps and fenders

I literally have 0experience with putting my own fenders on. do I just go off what tire clearance my frame has?

Seems a bit too high. for $150 you could probably grab something nicer with a bit of patience

Go with the largest tire size you plan to run, if you're going for steez. I run a 32 in the back of my townie, and the 37mm smooth VO fenders hug the lines of the tire nicely, while still allowing plenty of room for the errant rock or stick. The Planet Bike fenders on my IRO are 35mm, and clearance is tight enough that if they get knocked just a hair out of alignment, front and rear will rub. I spend way too much time smacking them around while I'm on the road.

Sadly, my St0P Cycles frame does not have any water bottle mounts. I have a seatpost mount, but it would be much nicer to have easier access to the water bottle.

So... Should I:

Top cap mounted bottle holder:

($9 at Universal Cycles)

or perhaps:

http://www.minourausa.com/_src/sc3100/bh60_blank.jpg

($8 at REI, tho I am not entirely sure if it will fit over 31.8 bars)

Maybe play it safe and just go with these:

($9 for the mounts, I happen to have a spare cage that I could use)

Or.... Perhaps someone has a better idea for a good bottle mount for the bike?

I would use the zip tie things. Easy to install, easy to remove, and cheeeeep.

striknein 01-11-12 07:38 PM

Handlebar bag with a pocket for a bottle?

homebrewk 01-11-12 07:42 PM

I need panniers now.

These work really well.

Or if you have a really reliable shop in your area and are willing to pay the $$$, they can put in bottle cage mounts on the down tube.

hairnet 01-11-12 08:01 PM

Yeah, they just drill the frame and install threaded rivets. I did it to my Schwinn
