Should I buy Rival for the road bike to replace the Apex that's on there and take the Apex and build a bike for my father?

keep the silver crank. dont bother with new wheels.

if youre happy with your apex, just buy your dad apex. itll save you the difference between rival an apex.

As far as I know the only functional difference between rival and Apex is a bit of weight, and the Rival cranks are a little nicer.

It's not full apex, I'm missing the cranks and the brakes. I was hoping to kill a few birds with one stone. Better shifting, less weight, and I can stop rubbing the chain on the FD.

Alright 1 for Kilo, 2 for waiting for Rush, and none for waiting for the LoPro...

im sure the cranks and brakes are fine. i have red shifters and not even apex cranks or brakes.

i dont see any reason to spend more for the rush, but its your money. give it a shot if its worth it to you.

What bothers me about the cranks is how much the flex. They're square taper and while riding I can rub the chain on the FD, not a huge deal, but something I'm not used to with my Omniums.

I've been thinking about starting a track build with an aluminum frame that I would race on but I've also been wanting to ride with some friends on some hardcore MTB trails. If I did a build, I would expect to invest $1500+ and a good 29er single speed could be had in the sub-$300 area. Even though winter is pretty much through, I was wanting to build an all-weather beater cyclocross style bike. If I decide to do that, I might as well buy something that can handle all terrains and trails.

I know the bike I have is perfectly adequate for my track, so it isn't necessary to build one yet. I just want to geek out on a "nice" bike.

So should I specialize and throw more money into track bikes, or broaden my horizons and get into MTBs? I used to jump dirt on BMX, so I have a rough understanding of what to expect, but have never ridden a true MTB on a trail.

I think I'm getting one soon... hopefully in time for spring break so I can hit the trails on an MTB instead of a road bike with knobbies (though I just bought knobbies so those will be going to waste...).

Yeah I'm psyched for spring break. My buddy is going to Colorado to interview for a summer internship and decided to invite me to come along. He's got buddies in the Fort Collins and Boulder areas, so we are pretty much paying for gas, food, and other "misc." expenses. I won't have the chance to get a MTB by then, but I am for damn sure bringing the Raleigh and plan on riding it every time he has to go out and be productive. I'd also like to check out Boulder's drome.

I've played around with the idea of getting a MTB for a while, and those singlespeed 29ers look awesome at BD. Anywhere I else I should be looking? I saw Nashbar had a cool one too.

After I tried some off roading I want a dirt bike sooooooo bad. SS or 1x8 with drops and a bar end shifter. Upgrading track bikes can saved for until you find yourself in the cat 4s or higher

Way more than I can spend at the moment, but those bikes are beautiful. I've been looking at Surly's Karate Monkey too. Someone posted an orange one at the head of a closed trail with snow. Ever since I saw that, I've had a woody for those bikes.
