The "Should I..." Thread
#1401
Thanks. I was looking at the Wabi rims as recommended to me in another thread. I would like to keep the price under $350 for a pair (built as I have no experience building wheels) while keeping the weight down, anything in black or silver (or combo).
#1402
I want to see them get 3 up, and then swept. The look on his face will be even better.
#1403
They would be like 1600 grams without rubber.

Thanks again for your advice, it is much appreciated.

sorry to drag this conversation on in this thread but, wouldnt that require me to build it myself or does RetroGression build wheels as well? Im trying to get the lightest possible wheelset under $350 (could do 400 if worth while) that is already built *not by me*
Thanks again for your advice, it is much appreciated.

One note, you'll have to wait a couple weeks for scrod to order the novatec hubs.

Yeah, these are built for under 400. They're closer to 300 if you wanted to build them yourself. You could shave off another 100+ grams using XR-200's, and a lower spoke count, but seeing as you bought a 61cm frame, I assume your're a pretty big guy, so I recommended 270's(little beefier), and 32 spoke front and rear.

I'm a big, but light guy. I am 6'4 & weigh 185 (been around that weight for 5 years so I dont plan on getting much heavier).

Go with the 270's.

Sure? They are pretty different wheelsets. I think it's unfair to judge a wheelset based solely on its weight/price ratio.
I got mine for free, so I am a little biased.

Borrowed the wheel set from my Kagero to test my newly built 722.
Planning on going with a Sun CR18 wheel set from velomine with 32C Pasela Tourguards.
Should I get silver rims and hubs, or black rims and hubs? The wheels will have silver spokes either way.

Black looks good. If you went silver, I think the chrome accents from the crank/fork/chain would stop looking like accents, and it would just look mixed up.

Black, everything else is black. The silver seat collar brings out enough silver so that the cranks don't look bad.
Gotta keep the black/silver balance.

I know those wheels are just temporary but your axle definitely needs to be in the dropout a little bit more. Black wheels look good. Black rims with gumwalls FTW.

It's mainly the black hubs w/ silver spokes combination. IMO, it just looks cheap and more pronounced coupled with the chrome fork. I'm all for black wheels and gumwalls, if they had a black rim/silver hub prebuilt set, I would've gotten those instead of the full silver set.

Thanks guys. Going to go with black rims/hubs. Hopefully the silver spokes tie it all together alright. I'd love to get black rims with silver spokes and silver hubs, I don't think I'm going to find a reasonably priced prebuilt set though.
@Scrod re:dropouts, I won't be running it like that, I just wanted to see it for visual reference and couldn't stand the idea of a saggy chain. I'll be running an 18T or 19T cog on the final setup so it'll be further forward and I'll shorten the chain if necessary.

I've been itching for some gears for a bit, what do you guys think... The asking price is $600
Vintage Columbus steel Colnago. Red and chrome. Paint is chipped, and the Columbus decal is squished. Colnago decals look ok. Stamped Colnago on both chainstays, I believe this dates the frame to the early eighties. Mix of components. Campy seat post and rear hub. Shimano 600 crank, brakes and Dura Ace rear der. Braze on Campy front der. Front wheel is generic alloy. Unknown bb and hs. Needs gum hoods and bar tape. Tires are recent Specialized armadillo. Turbo saddle.
This bike is a great restoration candidate.
