frame stripping

I just finished stripping my frame and I'm gonna build it back up after I sand the last little crevices. I just wanted to make this post so others could share their experiences with stripping their frames and post pictures of it, or for people who want to do it to be able to ask questions. I'll post pictures when I get it all together

If I were you, I'd look for a local place that can sandblast it... doesn't cost much and doesn't take long... otherwise, find a can of aircraft stripper. You'll spend twice as much time on the crevices as you did all of the main tubes.

I have stripped many a bike with Aircraft remover. Works like a champ. Just did a MTB to SS conversion and went bare metal. Just make sure you wear gloves and eye protection! Stuff burns on contact.

orielly's auto parts is where I got mine. and a big YES on the gloves, and you're gonna need more than one pair. every coat you have to wait 10-20 minutes and you probably got some on your gloves and it goes through the gloves and starts burning so I would have a pair of gloves for every coat. I just used basic latex gloves also from oreilly's.

How much did you need to take the paint off? Will a quart suffice?

That is your frame in bare metal? Are you planning on painting it?

If you use the airplane coating remover then you need to use nitrile gloves. It won't eat away at the nitrile gloves.

Or one of the many new "Colored Clear Coats" they've started making lately. You can get almost any color you want, it's crazy.

stripping chemicals often have heavy fumes that collect low around the floor, so use a fan to disperse them and use a mask

How fast do you think it'll rust? A buddy of mine did it about 3 months ago and his still is pretty rust free, with just a tiny bit of surface discoloration but not really bad rust.

You'll get surface rust, not a big deal. I was thinking of stripping my frame just because it's ugly and then letting it rust a little just for looks

It really depends on how humid it is where you live. I live right near the ocean and here, exposed metal develops surface rust in a matter of days.

Exactly. I buy them by the box since they are fairly cheap, and I use chems a lot. And they are great for working on the bike... keeps your hands clean.

I just stripped a frame to bare metal and just gave it a clear coat of Rustoleum brand gloss. Looks cool and is supposed to inhibit rust. We will see.
Stoked so far, though.
