Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

cog and lockring question

I HAVE A SINGLE SPEED BIKE THAT I HAVE BOUGHT A NEW CRANK FOR AND NOW I NEED TO BUY A COG.

THE QUESTION IS
1.CAN I USE THE LOCKRING THATS WITH THE BIKE AND PRESENT LOCKRING OR DO i NEED A LOCKRING SPECIFIC TO THE COG.
2. I WAS LOOKING INTO BUYING A SURLY COG BUT I NEVER SEE ANY LOCKRINGS FOR SALE. ON E-BAY THAT IS.
3. I'M NOT USING THE BIKE AS A FIXED GEAR, I DON'T KNOW IF THAT MAKES ANY DIFFERENT

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT, SORRY FOR ANY ERRORS OR SPELLING MISTAKES OR WRONG TERMINOLOGY.

If you're not using the bike as a fixed gear then why do you need a cog and lockring? Take some time and read some of the sticky's at the top of the page and acquaint yourself with what parts are what.

Why do you need a new cog? Do you mean chainring?

You will get more responses if you don't type in all caps. Most sane people do not enjoy reading text in all caps.

sorry for the caps..easier for me to see...yes I want a new cog the one that came with the bike is cheap stamped metal. i thought if I'm going to replace the crank and chainring I might as well replace the cog also. I hope its called a cog on the freewheel side

I didn't know that I would not need a lockring if I didn't use it as a fixed gear. Thats why I wrote and asked for help.

thanks for the help.

If it's on the freewheel side then you need a freewheel.
