Can't you just ask your postal service what the customs tax will be?

and often it will.

problem is insurance. USPS, when paying attention, is supposed to require that the declared value for insurance purposes match the declared value on the customs form. if you're willing to chance no insurance, and the shipper is willing to underestimate the value on the customs form, you'll likely be OK. unless of course there is shipping damage/loss.

Agreed. People ask us to declare stuff as a "gift" or lower the value of certain items all the time and we never do because in the chance of a package being "lost" somewhere along the way, we won't be able to file a claim and be reimbursed for the full amount.
