First of all, hi to everyone. I'm new to the forums, my name is Artie and I'm from Brooklyn, NY. I used to build bikes when I was a kid in the early 70s and I'm about to start my first build since then so I'm a little rusty. I recently ordered a frame from "State Bicycle Co." I'm looking to build a nice single speed, I'm no pro, strickly for commuting and weekend rides so I don't need high performance parts.
Most of the build seems pretty straightforward to me but I was hoping someone could give me some advice about the bottom bracket and crankset. Mainly I want to make sure I get compatible parts that won't break the bank.
And if you could post links to good "how to" videos for bottom brackets and cranksets.

I appreciate the job you do as a mod and didn't mean to appear to be spamming. I'm new to the site and wasn't sure which section would get me the help I was looking for so I posted in two plus the "Introduce yourself". Sorry if I set off the spam alert and got tango's panties in a bunch. BTW I could still use some help. Any advice (bike related) would still be greatly appreciated.

To be completely honest, you may or may not experience a slight "hazing" period. Some people hate it, some people accept it and become longtime members of our little dysfunctional family. Welcome aboard.

If you're looking for a decent crankset without getting anything too fancy or costly, this is a pretty good bang for your buck and it is compatible with any 68mm English-threaded BB with a 107mm spindle.

BTW - tango wears thongs.

Thanx Scrodzilla. That looks like it would work nicely with the 16T cog on the wheel I'm looking at. And I can take a little hazing. Can't be nearly as bad as the submarine service "initiation". I may be on hear a lot looking for help, the last bike I built (1974) had a bannana seat and a sissy bar so I'm a little rusty.

No apology needed. No harm, no foul. Do you know if the 107 crankset Scrodzilla linked will work with the frame made for 68 X 103?

If I'm thinking correctly, it'll work, but your chainline will be off a little bit. Caveat lector, I'm no mechanic.

So I'll probably need a spacer I guess?

Actually, my lady (whose name is Angie - she also posts here occasionally and I speak of her quite often) just reminded me that even though that particular crankset calls for a 107mm BB, a 103 actually gave her a straight chainline when she was using it a while back.

BTW - frames don't determine spindle length unless there is a known clearance issue with that particular frame.
