What kind of oil would one want to use in a high mileage Fiero ?

bbjones232 03-31-14 03:37 PM

Hi Scrod -- I'm looking for a single caliper side-pull front brake to fit a track fork for with a tight clearance. 23c tire won't clear a double caliper brake. Any recommendations? Am I stuck buying used? Other options I'm not seeing? Thanks.

Same as for a Ferrari, right?

/Not Scrod

on the PC website they claim "KAGERO and RENOVATIO framesets sold within the United States are NOT drilled for brakes, but the fork can be easily drilled for a brake." here:PEDAL Consumption | Frames

do you recommend that?

Precisely!

Stephen Dolan (manufacturer of Alpina F04 forks, which are used on both PC framesets) strongly advises against drilling them but the version available with Kageros and Renovatios have a pre-drilled crown with a plug in front.

From the track thread.

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=372003

All the axle nuts I have (lower one in that photo) are just slightly too big to fit into that opening. The upper nut is from a road skewer/axle I use for a road wheel that I sometimes use on track bike... about 2mm less in diameter, and fits neatly into the dropout.

Scrodzilla 03-31-14 08:22 PM

Some lower-end front track hubs have 10mm axles instead of 9mm, which means the axle nuts would be the same size as what is typically used on the rear. I don't know of any 10mm axle nuts that have a rotating washer that would be smaller in diameter.

Even if a 10mm axle squeezes into those dropouts, they are designed to accomodate a standard axle nut for a 9mm axle.

Thanks Scrod. To be clear, all the axles are standard 9mm. The nuts are 9mm. But the external diameter is the problem... just 1-2mm too big. I'll head to the shop and see if they have any that might be slightly smaller... though it sounds like these are fairly standard. Can't imagine this would be a problem with fork used by Leader though. Odd.

Scrodzilla 03-31-14 08:42 PM

That's really odd. I just pulled one of those forks off the shelf and all the 9mm axle nuts I've got here at the shop fit just inside that recessed part of the dropouts.

Are you talking about the stupid government safety tabs on the fork dropouts ? I had to file them off on my new Bianchi Super Pista fork for the axle nut washers to chear them and sit flush against the dropouts.

Scrodzilla 03-31-14 08:48 PM

No (but I hate those things too).

Look at the attachment Carleton posted.

Dannihilator 03-31-14 08:50 PM

Maybe a dud that got past QC? That happens sometimes.

Okay, problem seems to be on my end, not with the Leader fork. I have 3 sets of front (9mm) track nuts, and they are all identical outer diameter to my 10mm rear track nuts. But based on this photo of dura ace track nuts, can I presume that 9mm track nuts are supposed to be slightly smaller external diameter???

The ones I've got here (Dura Ace, Miche, Campy and generic) all have washers that are a little smaller.

First of all, use a fit calculator and figure out what frame size you actually need. Secondly, do you want steel or aluminum?

Thanks Scrod, done, CT should be around 56.4-56.9 according to www.competitivecyclist.com.
Steel or Alu....not too hung up on either from what I've read as mostly riding hard-ish 20-30km round town but no track, not many long road rides and no real off-road either.
As someone else mentioned, I checked with the Leader distro here and the Renovatio here has front/rear brake holes COMPLETE BIKES | BROTURES ONLINE | **********????BROTURES**********???

Mumonkan 04-01-14 08:24 AM

would i notice any difference in quality between a set of machine built wheels vs. a set of hand built wheels? (assuming the components are identical on both)

All framesets sold in Japan are required by law to be drilled for two brakes. The Kagero/Renovatio framesets sold here in the US are not drilled but (as we were just discussing on the previous page) the fork is drilled and plugged in the front.

Assuming you'll be having the machine-built wheels tensioned and trued by human hands before riding on them, probably not.

Nagrom_ 04-01-14 08:42 AM

QC on A23s get any better recently? And are they really weighing out at ~430g?

Scrodzilla 04-01-14 08:48 AM

I just sent a few back for having a ****ty finish and the joint seams on them usually suck.

triumph.man 04-01-14 02:47 PM

IRD technoglide sealed cartridge or Tange Falcon/Levin or a VO headset

Scrodzilla 04-01-14 03:26 PM

That largely depends on whether you want cartridge or cages bearings.

I'd prefer the cartridge bearings, but overall would want the better headset while keeping the classic look.

Scrodzilla 04-01-14 03:58 PM

The only one I've ever personally used is the Tange Levin so I can't really have an opinion of the others.

Scrodzilla 04-02-14 08:51 AM

Please stop asking me "would you buy this?" questions. That is not the purpose of this thread.

nelsonfung21 04-02-14 08:52 AM

damnn I immediately deleted that cause I found I was in wrong thread but you got me.

bmontgomery87 04-02-14 09:25 AM
