thanks! What is this "common sense" you speak of? :)

himespau 06-06-15 09:12 AM

I remember a few months back, my dad was visiting and I was talking about how I'd gotten a larger torque wrench to go with my smaller one so that I could get the torque right on my bb. He just kind of looked at me and said, "why do you need a torque wrench? In my day, we just tightened it up as tight as we could and went for a ride." Of course it was a different time, but when he was in college in the mid 60's, he hitchhiked one summer most of the way home, then stopped at a sears 100 or so miles from home, bought a bike in a box and an adjustable wrench, put it together and rode the rest of the way home. Different times.

i used to do the same thing, now that i own a torque wrench i realize i used to overtighten EVERYTHING

That is cool. You are right probably neither one of those scenarios would likely happen today.

Scrodzilla you are right about that most of the bikes that i had saw when i went into their shop was Trek road bikes and children's bikes. Which one would you go for looking at the specs comparing the City grounds aventon and the Raleigh rush hour. As those are the two bikes i can pick up from bike stores

Euthyphro 06-06-15 11:00 AM

Scrod, thanks for the little blue guy! I never got one of those from my LBS.

Mumonkan 06-06-15 11:07 AM

i buy parts from scrod just for the happy meal toys.

As posted in your other thread:

The Rush Hour is cro-mo steel, not hi-ten.

If the Aventon completes your local shop is selling are built up using the Aventon/6KU parts package available to dealers (like the ones being sold by CityGrounds), you're probably better off buying the Raleigh.

It really comes down to whether you want an aluminum or steel frame.

Hey Scrod,

Who is making the best replacement 6000 Bearings these days? I like to keep a few sets in my toolbox/parts box. I used to get them from Applied Technology here in Cleveland, but they no longer have a "walk up" counter.

Wheels Mfg make damn fine bearings. That's what I usually have on hand at the shop.

Whoa "Ask Scrod" threads are still here. That's pretty cool.

How's the move to the west coast been? I heard your name come up when a lot of dealers dropped Leader recently (not here to stir the pot) and felt I had to log back in and see if BFSSFG was still the same squad.

T13 06-09-15 02:45 PM

Hey man, hope yer doing ok.

AristoNYC 06-09-15 06:15 PM

Feel better.
Hope Angie does this to you:

dude, the left coast has been rough on you. good to know youre not holding any punches out there

orangeology 06-10-15 03:47 PM

hi Scrod.
what's your recommendation on the widest + rugged-est-ish tubular tire?

Thade 06-10-15 07:48 PM

Scrod,

i have andel standard track cranks but I need a 48t chainring. I can pickup an Omnium chainring for super cheap but I know they are beefier than most. Will it sit flush on spider and can I use my existing chainring bolts?

Try it. Worst case scenario is that you'll need longer bolts.

That's pretty vague. Cross? Road? Track?

That's what I was going to suggest! Our sponsored rider Bojac uses them on his track wheels (the SD Velodrome has a pretty rough outdoor surface). Those same wheels occasionally see street use and they hold up very well.
