Trying to buy a cheap wheelset for someone who weighs 105lbs right now and she definitely doesn't need the same spoke count as me, but is kinda stuck with it (it seems) unless she wants to really drop some $

It's probably because 32/36h rims and hubs are most common, distributors have tons of them and they're less expensive to buy wholesale - especially when buying a buttload of them. As I've talked about in other places around the forum, most Deep V wheelsets are built up using far too many heavy straight-gauge spokes, which makes for an anchor. I don't quite recall what it weighs (and I'm not pulling her bike apart to weigh it) but Angie's 32h Deep V on her 721 is laced 2X using Sapim Lasers and is much lighter than I ever expected it to be.

Historically, wheels used shallow box rims which require closer spoke spacing to prevent rim flex, and were typically 36 spoke. Modern wheels typically have deeper v-shaped rims that are fine with fewer spokes, and 28 rear (2X) with 24 front (radial) is a good setup for most situations.

TT=Hairnet V2.0?

Anyhow, word on the street is that Leader got bought out and that 2012 is going to be the end of the company. What say ye, Scrod?

What were your sources? Considering a bunch of new frames are set for 2012, I doubt this is true.

Actually, this reminds me.

Do you know anything about Emi Brown getting arrested for attempted murder in SF?

Why that reminds me.. No idea.

Scrodzilla 11-28-11 01:36 PM

No idea, man.

Emi doesn't know the **** I've been arrested for either, so I guess it evens out.

Notscrod here. I'm 5'-3" with 28" inseam male with a Wabi Lightning 42cm c-c with 650c wheels that has a 27.5" standover with a horizontal top tube and 23mm tires. I think the lowest standover you'll find in a track bike is 27" on the IRO Mark V HD, which has about a 1cm lower bottom bracket. The IRO seems to be perpetually out of stock, however. The Fuji Track with 650c wheels has a sloping top tube, but about the same standover due to a higher BB. This is what the Wabi Lightning looks like set up for me.

Thanks for the detailed response and thanks to everyone else. I came to a similar conclusion with the Fuji Track, as well as the Fuji Feather CX. Both come in 43 with 650 wheels. Maaaaybe with a sloping TT it'll work out, but even these might still be too high with the standover.

cool. I really liked how they're not open at the end actually. do you have any other used stuff going up soon? like maybe those nittos.

Scrodzilla 11-28-11 01:53 PM

Those Nitto risers are long gone and on vw02's Pake:

We'll most likely be putting some more stuff up as soon as we recover from the huge pile of Black Friday orders that came in.

calv 11-28-11 02:07 PM

I'm happy that the Black Friday sale was a success, man. Good ****!

Sorry I missed your question but I'm glad TT chimed in.

I met a dude last night that works at a Leader shop here in town. He was saying that after 2012 they're done. Sounded like bull**** to me, but ya never know.

No worries dude, that brings your average down to like 99.99999%. I trust the notscrods as much as I trust the is-scrod (as much as you can trust someone you've never actually met in person). Funny how the internet and society works.

Does Leader even have shops? I'm guessing the guy meant dealer.

You're right though, total bull****.

hamfoh 11-28-11 06:19 PM

any good/cheap/small/silver crankarms that come to mind that would go with a Tange Bottom Bracket - 68x110.5mm bb? for a 722 build (<165 arms)

Scrodzilla 11-28-11 06:23 PM

Vuelta Pistas? Pretty sure they call for a 110mm spindle with the ring on the outside.

hamfoh 11-28-11 06:24 PM

ahh! didn't think of that. I was also looking at those origin8 branded Andels and just getting a 103mm bb

Scrodzilla 11-28-11 06:27 PM

Be advised - the stock chainring on the Vuelta crankset leaves a lot to be desired but the crank arms themselves are decent, especially considering the price.

hamfoh 11-28-11 06:28 PM

just what I needed to hear. have an extra chainring I'm not using anyway. thanks as always!

gonna be much of an issue running a 1/8 on the 3/32 until I actually feeling like taking it off one arm and moving it to these?

Scrodzilla 11-28-11 06:34 PM

Not at all. Angie's been using a 1/8" chain on her stock S300 ring for a while now without any issues.

Dealer. That was my mistake. He gave me the name of the place, but I'm keeping it anonymous for their protection haha.

Thanks. This may be retro-g territory now, but since we're on the topic

should your Shimano UN54 bottom bracket work (100mm version) fine with the pistas as well? realized I didn't order the BB yet afterall so still time to change some things

@jimmy not only does leader have new frames due next year, but didn't they just become the distributor for dodici stateside? that information doesn't make a lot of sense

Scrodzilla 11-28-11 07:15 PM

You meant 110mm BB right? Yeah, it'll work.
