could it be the orientation of lower seal? 1st photo balls down nice & clean, balls facing cup & things get wierd kina kicking myself for not going sealed... |
Does the seal look the same on both sides? If not, try flipping it over.
Doesn't the Pig have a large set of bearings and a small one? If so, the larger on goes on the bottom. Why did you choose a downhill headset? |
downhill headset... no particular reason, a rookie mistake so for mismatch alone, I am sure I will have to replace it
Yes, the large bearing goes on the bottom... I pulled it apart again & flipped the seal but it seems to be the same. With good compression, enough to make the steering stiff, I still have a minor "rock" Maybe I did not tap the star nut in far enough and that could be compounding my problem? |
No worries...The Pig is a decent headset. I was just curious.
Not tapping the starnut in enough wouldn't really cause that problem. If it works better with the lower caged bearings facing down... |
well, this one may have to remain a mystery for me. I can't stand solving a problem and not really understanding how. Quite a bit of searching and I found a handful of references to a similar problem but not descriptive enough to know for sure. This may be true of all caged bearings??? but this cage is huge and the bearings are exposed on both sides. Tapered side down fits perfectly, smooth as silk so for now that's how she stays.
That said, I am wondering if this headset is out of place on my pake frame/forks? While aesthetics should not be a deciding factor for parts, I don't want it to look odd.... otherwise everything else on the bike is a good "fit" for the frame: brooks, tack cranks etc. so I want to do it correctly Orbit X? Anyhoo, Thanks again & thanks for ur patients with me tying up this thread for a while... |
No prob...that's what this thread is for.
It doesn't look that odd at all. Keep it until you need a new headset. |
scrod, do my measurements still look like i did something wrong (as per last post on last page) ?
|
I'm not the one measuring you so I have no idea.
|
defeated by logic once again
|
|
Scrod. Repainting a frame. What are your thoughts. Leave it naked (bare paint, no ornamentation) or get some cheap logos made for it so it doesn't look so...empty like a blank canvas. Debating in my head whether it looks better just plain and pure, or if that looks like it needs something.
|
Unless it's a vintage frame being restored to look original, I would leave it blank.
|
I made custom decals for a friend of mine's raw frame.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...s/76b56590.jpg I don't know why, but I felt like this was an appropriate place to share that. |

OK, thanks. I'd just seen where you could get a signcutter to cut your first initial and last name in script in vinyl that you'd put on before you put the clearcoat on. Had considered putting that on the top tube right next to the seat tube. But yeah, plain is fine for a cheap old frame that's nothing special. |
Something like that would be fine. Just don't go putting giant "Bianchai" decals on the thing.
|
Found a guy who wants to buy locally.
He rides a 55cm 725, and he's 5'6". Do you think he'll fit on a Medium Kagero? He sounds a bit small for a 55cm. |
Dude, I rode a 55cm 725 and I'm 5'10". I sounds like he'd be more at home on your Kagero.
|
Scrod,
Assuming that I can't get the BK to work, I'm going to look at finding another frame. The Pake Rumrunner seems promising, I like the geo. Though the unicrown fork is rather unpleasing to the eye. Would I notice the 3mm rake difference between the Pake fork and the no name Straight Blade fork? I'm assuming no, but figured I'd ask. Thanks. |
Most people I've built them up for end up using either the straight blade or Excel fork and they work just fine.
|
wut you're only 5'10"? For some reason I thought you were taller. Long torso/arms?
|
Arms like a chimp. I can smack mother****ers in the mouth from across the room.
|
Thats an interesting image
