What'd you invest in?

homebrewk 12-31-11 02:58 PM

100 shares of BAC. Bought it low and sold it high.

jimmytango 12-31-11 04:14 PM

What is BAC? Also, how did a 15 year old kid get money to play the stock market?

homebrewk 12-31-11 04:19 PM

Bank of America. At the time it was around $5 a share; I saved up $500 (took around 2-3 years) and bought 100 shares. Then, I waited. The stock rose to around $12 and I sold it.

homebrewk 12-31-11 04:22 PM

What I didn't want to have happen was to have my parents pay for the bike. I don't want to turn into a spoiled brat who can't provide anything for himself.

hamfoh 12-31-11 04:47 PM

I'd gladly let someone spoil me

homebrewk 12-31-11 05:18 PM

It's more about independence and self-reliance.

At 14, I don't think you should really have much of either. I certainly wish I hadn't.

homebrewk 12-31-11 05:30 PM

Whatever. I just think it's pretty important and I certainly felt good about saving up for something and then buying it myself.

jimmytango 12-31-11 05:48 PM

I can see both sides of it. I was working 40 hours a week at 14, and living on my own at 16. It kind of feels good to know that everything I've owned since I was 14 has been paid for by my labor, but at the same time I kind of wish I had been a normal kid whose parents helped out.

hamfoh 12-31-11 05:57 PM

dear scrod

how do you feel about derails

It does look similar but I doubt they're made in the same place. I really like the look of the beveled edges on those crank arms.

They got back to me, fwiw:

Hi Kasey, our cranks are forged and then CNC'd. They are quite stiff. Definitely not as stiff as Omniums as those are the stiffest cranks out there right now though.

I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,
Ben

My parents certainly help by buying groceries or shoes, but when it comes to the bigger stuff (like my bike) I usually pay.

PlattsVegas 12-31-11 07:13 PM

I had similar circumstances homebrewk. Good for you for taking responsibility. Most kids these days cant wipe their own ass without crying to their parents. And to Jimmytango... mad respect. I am lucky enough to have supportive parents who help me out when they can. But I have managed to pay for all of my schooling/studying abroad/car/insurance/bikes etc. out of pocket. Work hard, spend smart and you will be happy.

homebrewk 12-31-11 09:38 PM

Exactly. Plus, all of the kids I see at school all drive Audis and text on iPhone 4s.

calv 12-31-11 10:16 PM

Hey I was one of those kids in high school. Except I was driving a 1991 Nissan Stanza.

It gets annoying, doesn't it. Especially when after crashing them they continually get new ones.

hamfoh 01-01-12 02:29 AM

scrod these are the same ones you have right, only silver? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Novatec-A165...item2c5057e94e - been wanting the silver ones to pop up and ebay may be my only option

There was a kid who literally threw his phone down just to impress his friends. He got a new one the next day.

Also, kids seem to like Gucci laptop bags.

Yes, but they're fixed/free. For that price, you can buy All-city branded Novatec hubs just about anywhere.

This kind of thing pisses me off to no end. Like jimmytango, I grew up on the exact opposite side of the coin and my parents have literally never bought me or helped pay for a single thing - not because they didn't want to but because we didn't have a lot of extra money. I feel it instilled a much stronger set of values in me that most people grow up with.

yummygooey 01-01-12 01:35 PM

My parents help pay for education and living, but entertainment is on me.

docboyd 01-01-12 02:39 PM

Scrod, do you want kids?

Scrodzilla 01-01-12 02:50 PM

At one time, Angie and I did. The more we talked about it, the more we realized we absolutely don't.
