i dunno, instant face murder?
lol well i bought a cheapo ebay ritchey 25.8 stem for a rockhopper build (still in mail)
and i have a 25.4 riser already...ill give it a try, it might just clamp without any type of shimming, ill give it a try :thumb:

Scrodzilla 12-15-11 12:30 PM

Depending on the risers, they may not even be an actual 25.4mm. ****, the stem may not even be a true 25.8mm for that matter.

illdthedj 12-15-11 12:57 PM

yah thats sort of what i was thinking when i bought the stem...that my 25.4 bars would work just fine in a 25.8 stem...and that the bars could be more like a 25.5 and the stem more like 25.7...and that .2 of a mm is not enough to worry about.

i just have read exact opposite reactions to shimming bars....
theres the "its no biggie" group, and the "omg ur gonna die" group.
im sort of in the first, but i tend to listen to actual bike mechanics over people with unfounded opinions on the internet

Beer can shim it if you really need to.

prooftheory 12-15-11 01:27 PM

Wouldn't a soup can shim work if you needed something slightly thicker?

seau grateau 12-15-11 01:29 PM

I guess so. Harder to cut though.

hamfoh 12-15-11 01:35 PM

scrod, where did you get the shim for angie's brakes for her charge bars? I had to make my own but am hoping for a more legit contraption.

himespau 12-15-11 01:40 PM

anybody know how thick a beer can is? I'd imagine rather thicker than 0.2 mm (0.2 on each side makes 0.4).

Scrod, you shimmed some brake levers? I'm thinking of getting interupter levers, but the bars I want to put them on are 22 mm (soma moustache II) and no interupters are that narrow.

Any lbs should have a pile of rubber shims that come with reflectors which are the perfect width for the clamp on a cross lever. You'll just need to cut it to the right length to go under half the clamp. Because the shim material is pretty hard rubber, the lever won't squish around like when using a strip of inner tube or whatnot.

It really depends on the bars/stem. I say give it a try first, then worry about shimming if necessary.

illdthedj 12-15-11 01:47 PM

i actually have shimmed some cane creek cross levers with some cloth handlebar tape. it worked out pretty well, they are not moving and i really tried to make them move after trying it out.

i wrapped the tape 3 times, and when i tightened the lever down the cloth tape got super compressed and seemed to fill the space really well.

hamfoh 12-16-11 04:52 PM

best way to remove grips off a bar?

Scrodzilla 12-16-11 04:53 PM

I always use WD40 for installation and removal.

hamfoh 12-16-11 04:56 PM

ty sir

striknein 12-16-11 05:09 PM

Flaming Lips and Neon Indian on New Year's Day. Should I go?

Scrodzilla 12-16-11 05:16 PM

If you like those bands and have no other plans, go for it.

hamfoh 12-16-11 06:30 PM

worked well for removing, as far as installing do I just spray a little in and then let it sit and dry? ourys slip off a lot on the urban risers so I'm hoping for some stick

Scrodzilla 12-16-11 06:32 PM

It's weird that you guys say that. I had no trouble getting my grips to stick on those bars.

Yeah, just spray a little bit inside the grips (not too much!), slide them on and let 'em sit for a few.

Hello, been lurking here for a while and this is my first post. Details are slim but what do you think this bike is worth, roughly?

Do I need new chainring bolts if I were to replace the stock omnium chainring with the FSA ring?

Four dollars and fifty-five cents.

Dannihilator 12-16-11 09:32 PM

Should I do some filming tomorrow?

Scrodzilla 12-16-11 09:37 PM

Of you psuedo-"hauling ass" and busting mad whip skids in traffic? No. Of you killing it on the dirt jumper? Yes.
