You have to be running pretty fat tires to have wheel+tire diameter of 700mm

Nagrom_ 02-15-12 05:31 PM

Well this math is for 29ers so you were about right the first time lol. Thanks though Scrod and Nagrom now I won't be confused as **** anymore.

Dear Scrod,

What is the significance of my avatar that you assigned me (if there is any). I can't figure out what the reference is. I have wondered/pondered this for quite some time.

LesterOfPuppets 02-15-12 08:05 PM

I've often wondered why you have the Britney kid as yer avatar. On the edge of my seat waiting to hear what the corn bit's all about.

bonanz 02-15-12 09:26 PM

To divulge the secret behind my method of assigning avatars may cause irreparable damage the universe. You wouldn't want that.

Every freewheel has a corresponding tool made for removing it. What freewheel do you have?

bonanz 02-16-12 01:16 PM

something like this. its on a friends pos bike that wanted to repack his hub and we ran into this. I suggested we could just destroy it and get it off and he could get a new one, but he's acting like a cheapskate and doesn't want to do that for his pos frankenstein bike, and I kinda understand really.

scrod:
what are your favorite tire levers?

i had a few blue parks but the tips get rounded down and ive already broken two.
i have two pedros and they seem good but they are new.

I always use Pedro's levers. I think they're one of the only things Pedro's makes that I actually like.

You need this.

I'm pretty sure what you linked to is for the type of freewheel pictured below. the freewheel in question (like pictured above) has no notches at all. thanks though

Scrodzilla 02-16-12 03:11 PM

You're screwed. Check the Park Tool site.

Ultraspontane 02-16-12 06:53 PM

Dear Scrod Zilla. When will you ban bome. He calls me names every day.

Scrodzilla 02-16-12 07:29 PM

When you start reporting the posts so mods can have a reason to take action.

edit: Who is bome? I did a user search and found nothing.

homebrewk 02-16-12 10:00 PM

Scrod,

Would not using a torque wrench when re-installing a star nut/stem be a bad idea? Can I use a hex wrench?

No he's not. That's the back side of the freewheel. It's a standard 4-notch, and uses a Park FR-6 or Pedros 4-notch tool.

jdgesus 02-16-12 11:13 PM

i had a **** freewheel that i thought was on backwards.. nope, it had zero notches for removing on either side
had take the it apart completely to remove (and destroy it)

If you'd had it on backwards, it would have frewheeled forward and not worked. I have that very same Dicta freewheel and all the logo stuff is on the back side, which is confusing. The front is plain with recessed threads and 4 notches.

jdgesus 02-16-12 11:41 PM

this one was not branded... and had no recessed threads... came off finally once the face was off (and its guts spilled all over)

bonanz 02-17-12 12:54 AM

that dicta is not the specific freewheel in question, it was just an example pic I googled of one without notches. the one on my buddy's bike is installed currently (obviously in the right direction) and there are no notches to use any freewheel removal tool

Scrodzilla 02-17-12 06:19 AM

How about posting a pic of what you actually have?

When tightening your top cap, you'll know when it's too tight because you'll feel the headset binding when you turn the bars.

I see. Would it feel like it is grinding?

Scrodzilla 02-17-12 09:02 AM

Uh, no. Unless your bearings are shot to hell or filled with sand, it will just feel like your headset is too tight.

All tightening the top cap does is pre-load your headset before clamping your stem on. It's easy to tell if it's too loose (headset will jiggle) or too tight (headset will bind).
