Chris King BB as an alternative to GXP?

Lately I've seen a lot of members ditching the Omniums because of the BB. I personally had them for only 2 months without a problem but that made me search for alternatives in case something happens.

I've came up with the CK BB...why people didn't invest in this alternative? Is the CK BB not good enough? Or is too pricy for what it is?

You should ask in Mechanics or Road. Relatively few people in SSFG have experience with high-end GXP bottom brackets simply because few people have upgraded them. But, many have on the road boards.

Not really a fan of GXP because I'm too lazy to service it every 100 hours. I'd rather have a sealed BB that I just toss and replace every 3 years or so. CK and Hope BB's are supposedly bomb proof but they are $$$. Hope is $80ish plus the GXP spacer kit. CK is $120ish. Compare that to $25-35 for the 2011 GXP.

I got a King because I wanted the best. Never did try out the regular GXP that came with my S300's... Later on when I would find myself with a RED crankset, I decided to swap the RED's team GXP for the King... I have not put many miles on either BB's but I can definitely feel that the king BB will last me a very, very long time.

How much was it? around $120? It's not hard to know a king product will most likely last compared to other things. Seems like a logical upgrade for when you GXP bb that comes with the omniums or something.

This should be the be all end all answer regarding GXP or any external cup BB for that matter CK FSA or otherwise...

IF YOUR BB SHELL IS NOT FACED (perfectly parallel surfaces) PROPERLY THE BEARINGS WILL START TO GET EFFFED UP IN SHORT ORDER!

Some frames are better or worse than others.

I have raced GXP on my CX bikes since 2007, I faced my BB shells lightly and have never had a GXP BB go on me ... I have only replaced them when they have fouled due to exposure to the filth that CX doles out. BB facing requires uber expensive tools and should not be attempted by untrained souls. I barely trust any LBS to do it, at least not on expensive bikes, unless the mechanic is a seasoned pro be learly

I always face my BB shells before installing a BB and my stock GXP was clicking and popping (not creaking) on the very first day I had it. Rode with it for a while, then replaced it. The new one started doing the same thing after about a week and when I removed that one, I could feel some crunching going on inside when turning it with my finger. There was no way I was going to spend a bunch of money on a "good" GXP bottom bracket and risk having the same issue so I scrapped the Omniums for 75s.

GXP may be a great system - for road/MTB bikes - but I really don't think it can withstand the constant forward/backward force put on them by riding fixed (at least not the cheapo version that comes stock with Omniums).

Scrod, that sucks ... never rode em' on my track bike. I can see how that could happen and based on how you describe yourself size/weight etc I can see why. There are a few messengers here in pvd that use them on their track bikes and I have never heard them complain about them. That there is the breaks I guess.

Good point. My CAAD 10 has a GXP BB (I think) and I haven't had that many problems with it.

Another note about BB facing as to not confuse or mislead anyone ... this only needs to be done on a new frame, not every time you install a new BB.

mine has been clicky and popy since day one as well. but seems to still turn buttery smooth from what i can tell.

can someone shed some light on how to properly remove a gxp bb? when i bought my kilo i had the oem cranks swapped out for the s300 i had on the vilano at the lbs. When i came to pick it up there was a massive scratch on the bb. They probably used a vice grip on it from what it looks like. its just cosmetic but i see it... EVERY DAY. </3

So has anyone tried a Chris King BB with Omnium set up and have a review? Im curious myself because I WAS going to buy the King BB but the $120 price isn't helping at all.

basically you can copy/paste scrod's post into my reply box and that was my experience with it. early popping and clicking, one you could actually feel, not just hear. would remove everything, clean, and reinstall and retighten everything. sometimes it would go away for a day but it always came back, it drove me nuts. I sold my first pair because it was driving me insane. the pair on my leader hasn't been a problem but has about 1/50th the mileage. I fully expect to replace them before the year is up too.

scrod and I are bigger riders though compared to a lot of you it seems though, add that in with brakeless and I just don't think the BB does well with our setup.
