Either that or an antibellum iron furnace circa 1837.

Cooper's Furnace, Cartersville, Georgia

Iron ore was brought in on a spur line to the top of the hill behind the furnace. The rocky outcrop just behind the furnace is hidden by the trees but you can see part of it to the left. There is a trail that goes up there where you can see the remains of the base of the ramp which would have extended to the top of the furnace. Ore was dumped in the top along with burning coals. A bellows or other method to blow air through it would have been used. A clay plug at the bottom would prevent the 2800° molten iron from pouring out. A guy would have gone underneath and poked the clay plug with rod of some kind and the iron pour would begin. They would typically make bars of iron to be sent to nearby forges to make rails for the railroad, canon, guns, etc.

The small railroad engine that worked the site was used to chase the locomotive stolen from Kennesaw GA in what is known as the Great Locomotive Chase. 12 union soldiers stole a locomotive when the train stopped for breakfast in Kennesaw. They were chased by the small locomotive from the furnace and then a larger locomotive joined the chase further north. They were caught just short of Chatanooga, TN, brought back to Atlanta, tried and executed by the Confederates.

Lots and lots of civil war history where I live.

I don't want that job.

I love Civil War sites. I've been all over the south, PA, KY, the Virginias, Carolinas, etc. Fascinating stuff. It's always an eerie feeling when you are standing right where it was happening.

Thanks for the other pics too. That one road looks tight though. I hope the motorists in the area cut you some slack.

Attachments don't work the same way on this older VB version it appears. It's like what you see is what you get, and what you get is the little thumbnail. It no longer seems to show in the post, nor are the attachments clickable. I had the same thing happen the other day.

+1

I just started using IMGUR a couple weeks ago.

I shouldn't have waited so long.

Free, simple, editable, and very easy to access and organize.

If the file size isn't very small, about 20 kb, the upload fails. You can only import directly from a link, which means storing on the web somewhere. Now that I've got a smartphone, I need to set up an account like Imgur.

Yeah, I have a Smugmug account too which I throw everything on.

You'll love Colorado, one my most favorite states.

Haha, and thanks for the blog love! I was trying to keep it, along with the instagram account, somewhat secret, but since it's tied to my email, it keeps popping up in social media tied to me. Oops.

However, this new version of the forum is slightly different. It picks up instagram photos much better...maybe it's the same if you just post the link to imgur.

Edit...guess not. This should work tho...

Nice! We went last year for the Pro Challenge and spent a couple of days in Breckenridge, then a few more in Denver. Denver was nice, but Breckenridge was amazing. I love mountain towns.

Haha, we're bikepacking the Prescott Circle Trail next weekend. It could be done in a day, but we're going to split it up over three days. I think we're about 3-5 miles from town the entire trip, so are plan is to ride into town in the evening for chow and whatnot.

Basically, just wanted to test everything out and make sure we have everything we need before we do anything serious.

Yeah, our longest stretch without water will be about 17 miles...which I chose to try out on the hottest day so far this year. When I started it was 100, when I finished it was approaching 108. I went through 3L of water that day, so I think my camelback and a nalgene full of water should cover it. I also plan on using one of my feed bags for skratch labs mix, so that should work out pretty well for me I think.
