Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

What gear ratio and tires size are you running?

I wanna say 39x17 but could be an 18 on the back and 32c Specialized Houffalize or whatever tires. They are great for the summer but probably the worst tire ever for mud/wet grass.

Thanks, looking CX-ify my Steamroller later this summer and am trying to figure what kind of gearing I want to run for off-road stuff. I'm thinking around 40x17.

Currently running mine at 40/18 and sometimes wish the front was 38 or 39. Sucks for commuting though.

It all depends on how much climbing/loose terrain you are dealing with. I'm able to climb most of every thing I find, though sometimes if it's real sandy/loose then I can't maintain the traction when climbing out of the saddle.

start at a 2:1 ratio of teeth and go from there. ~64GI is gonna be high if you got steep, rough climbs

get the fattest tires you can put in that thing, small block 8's are a good "testing the waters" tire, but theyre still good enough to ride the tour divide on

if you have a bike with gears, try some #roadbikesoffroad and keep it on one cog and see how it feels

theres rarely a time when youre gonna wish you had a higher gear, but id put money on begging for something lower at one point or another on the trail

Yeah, I've seen a lot of hate for the Kilo OS here and other forums. The complete bikes from BD were pretty ugly IMO, but I've seen some great looking builds. I built my OS up from the bare frame and I love it!

Ah ok, looks kinda like the sunset is on your right so I figured it was the north shore. Anyways yeah the lakefront is always great for a late afternoon quickie.

Yeah, the sun was on my left, you can see it reflecting off of the wheels and chainring/cranks. I live pretty close to the lake so I tend to ride there a lot for those little after work rides. Kinda wish they still closed the east bound lanes on the weekends though.

Yep. But I got no complaints for all the bike lanes they put in the past few years.
