The 1st gen sram red cassette is hollow. It transmits noise more than cassettes of traditional design. Because cassettes are designed differently, the amount of noise that you hear may not have a direct relatioship with efficiency. FG cogs, on the other hand are all solid steel and should transmit noise about the same.

I have a sram equiped bike. It don't find it to be very noisy, but i don't have a red cassette either. I have no particular love for sram, but whats the deal with all the sram hate.

SRAM components are poorly designed, and and fail far more frequently than Shimano or Campagnolo. Another reason I'm not a SRAM fanboy is that they really aren't innovative. Grip-Shift is really the only successful new product that they've created. Even that(twist shifting) had been done before. Many of their products aren't even their own design, but were designed by other companies that they purchased(Avid, Rock Shox, Zipp).

On the plus side, their warranty department works quickly, and never gives me a hassle.

Sounds like a couple of you guys were using the miche cog carrier system.

Thoughts? How does the quality of the cog compare to others? DA, EAI, etc?

My miche system has been running smoothly for more than 4 years. I change my gearing a couple of times per year. The carrier is holding up fine, no issues with it. The cogs are beginning to show wear, but i have ridden teach of them thousands of miles. I wore out two eai cogs in the same amount of time, but it could be because i tended to use those cogs on bikes that get ridden in the slop more often.

I may need to brush up on my doctrine, but I don't think there are gifts for festivus.

I use the miche system. I like it and it doesnt seem to make much noise. I suppose if I used a3/32 chain as opposed to the 1/8 i have it might be quieter. Doesnt rust as much as the surly ones i used either.
