Pulling out during a no handed trackstand is worse.

At the moment, specialized elite road shoes and shimano R540's, until some mavic ti spindle goodness comes via ups, hopefully not damaged.

All i can tell you is they were basically as light as could be set up (never had a prob on my mtb they came off of, either) and i yanked up on the pedal upstroke and came out, then ended up getting taken for a ride on the other leg til i got my balance back/slowed down. i have since readjusted the cleats (that foot was basically out of float in the heel-rotating-clockwise direction when i felt like my foot was "neutral", which i didn't notice) so maybe it was more of a twist out than pull straight out situation.

i am far from in awesome shape and it was even on the leg i had knee surgery on in June (still weaker than the other leg), so go figure.

SPD and SPD-SL are very different in terms of how and why they release. It's extremely hard for most people to pull out of SPD-SLs due to the design. SPDs are a different story.

Here's a link to a thread by a poster who had some issues with SPDs: Don't sprint on SPDs.

Nagrom_ 01-06-13 08:18 PM

I've pulled out on my 105's once. Now I run the track bike, and the road bike at different torque settings.

sinikl 01-06-13 08:19 PM

thanks for the link. that thread also suggests if you have no float, you can twist out sprinting when you wouldn't otherwise, so i'm relatively sure that's how my weedy self pulled out.

lots of people can pull out of normal spd's at will if theyre fresh

but thats why you don't sprint full gas on them. shouldnt be a need to. if you find ur self doing that a lot get some road pedals

what were you doing?

i don't understand how people accidentally unclip. even on eggbeaters, the only time i ever accidentally unclip is when i'm MTBing with and hit a tree with my foot or doing 2' bunny hops. i can't imagine unclipping accidentally with SPD-SL's, even on the lowest tension.

as TMonk put it, "sprinting full gas."

I was pulling too hard for the torque setting. Raised it, haven't had issues.

you guys bike weird then

true story tho

i can ride pretty long tho (twss)

Dannihilator 01-06-13 10:13 PM

The two scariest pullouts I ever had were on speedplay pedals. The first was with frogs, cornering at a good clip when I pulled out with my left foot. Second was sprinting on zeros.

TMonk 01-06-13 10:14 PM

it happens to me on my keos but its because i take too long to replace my damn cleats not because im that strong like lololol

...which is why i wanna switch to shimano spd-sl kinda. dem tabs.
peeps who use them say that the strike/scrape in hard corners sumtimes tho

yummygooey 01-06-13 10:25 PM

I corner hard on 172.5's and spd-sl's and no issues.
