Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

A couple of actual Jackasses on one of my morning routes.

Pretty friendly fellers too. I'd ride one cept for the lectric fence.

That should be a Trek Earl, not an amazing bike but a fair SS made by one of the big names of cycling. The two top tubes make a handy place to place a u-lock and if I remember correct that plate piece between the top tobes has a botttle opner for extra hipster appeal.

Beyond missing a grip that bike checks out fine with me from what I see.

What made you think it was JA? The double top tube? I think that was just trying to be retro.

This bike infuriates me and I can't even pinpoint why. Less than the sum of it's parts.

Looks like an Earl. Agree, cannot find JA in this picture other than the grip as mentioned.

Bikes: En plus one

Aside from all the obvious JA features this bike has, the seat is so far back, it looks practically unrideable. Maybe it is actually a wheelie bike.

Is that a Pinarello Prologo TT bike? What a shame.

its a stayer bike. this pops up here from time to time.

Stayer Bikes - Bike Hugger

or something similar with lots of trail for stability at the speeds that guy intended to travel. Somebody count, what that gear ratio?

130x15 or 225 gear inches according to this article: Date with Death. He apparently needed to be pushed to 50Mph before he was stable enough to power the bike under his own control.

Ahh, that makes sense then. I couldn't imagine that someone would go through the trouble of setting it up to photograph it and then put the fork on backwards. Now I get it. I've heard of Stayer bikes before, just never noticed the fork.

Yep, 130x15.

It isn't a Strayer track bike. It was build for a speed record.

José Meiffret went 204 kph (127 MPH) behind a gull-wing Mercedes-Benz 300SL on the German Autobahn in 1962.

The bike was 40lbs and had wooden rims to withstand the heat.

By the way, Meiffret was a Trappist monk. He said,

“In case of fatal accident, I beg of the spectators not to feel sorry for me. I am a poor man, an orphan since the age of eleven, and I have suffered much. Death holds no terror for me. This record attempt is my way of expressing myself. If the doctors can do no more for me, please bury me by the side of the road where I have fallen.”

The guy crashed once at close to 80 mph and the newspapers announced his death but he lived. That's when he decided to become a monk. I know several Trappist monks and spend a little time now and then at the monastery near me. Those guys are hard as nails.
