I've heard people who use them (mostly MTB and CX riders) argue that they keep the mud/dirt off of the valve/pump interface or the pin from being bent by sticks or rocks, but that's not a concern for me. I ride bareback.

They are kinda nice when inflating a tube from zero psi, cuz you don't have to press the stem up into the chuck, but for day-to-day use they don't really come into play for me.

No. I guess i come from off road motorcycles (observed trials) where you can run very low tire pressures and there is a possibility of the tire slipping on the rim (we didn't always run rim locks). Under those conditions it was useful to take the nut of the valve, that way if the tire slipped it would not tear the valve stem off the tube and a leaning valve was a visible indicator that the tire had slipped.
Old ways die hard, in reality it is not very likely a tire with even a modest (by bicycle standards) 50 psi is going to slip on the wheel.

That Colossi sucks. Chode, negative and cheapo Cinelli stem, high stack, over rotated bars, slammed forward and pointed down saddle, straight post with steep seat tube, 32h 80mm carbon rear, crappy Crankbrothers pedals. Who ever built that thing had no idea what they were doing. Riding that bike would make you a total jackass.

that is what I did to my first road bike before I knew anything. UGH WHY
