There are several various hornet/yellow jacket species that could be the pests you had, but those Japanese hornets are the real deal, and any appearance of theirs in these parts would certainly be news.

Also, on the subject of cicadas and hornets, make sure you aren't talking about cicada killer wasps:

Which look mean, and usually buzz around in small groups, but are perfectly harmless to humans, and, as the name suggests, are primary predators of the cicada.

off to crested butte for the weekend. Single track ripping is on the agenda.

Man, I need to get back on my fixed gear :(

Today should be a day for a pair of thousands. First thousand miles of the year, and 1000k for this month. Great day all around. And the other day, on the very tail end of a ride, I got stopped by a cop. Wasn't in trouble at all, he was genuinely concerned for my safety after some redneck in his giant pickup was tailgating me for close to a half mile. He was seriously never farther than 6 ft, and more often about 3 ft from my rear wheel. A little nerve-wracking

I also finally bought my ticket to go see Streetlight Manifesto in a few weeks when they come to Grand Rapids. Been waiting years to see them live, and I guess their farewell tour is as good a time as any

prooftheory 05-31-13 11:07 AM

Why did the cop stop you and not the pickup? Tailgaiting is illegal, no?

Street rider 05-31-13 11:10 AM

He asked if there were bad words between us, whether or not the guy was 'pushing' me down the road, whether or not anything really bad had happened to me. The truck had pulled into a parking lot about a half mile behind where the cop talked to me, so it wouldn't have been hard for him to go back and write a ticket.

Happy to hear you have legit law enforcement in your area. Usually the news is all about dick drivers and not enough about the heroes behind the scenes.

Took advantage of a 50% off everything sale Synapse-films started today. Ended up ordering an Intruder blu/DVD combo, Wild Zero DVD, The Exterminator blu/DVD combo, and Brain Damage DVD for $52(+free shipping) when normally it would have cost me well over $100 if it wasn't for this sale. :D

Today I poured a double espresso into a cup of Haagen-Dazs vanilla. I was so psyched about it i took to every form of social media to share.

Used to love doing that with pumpkin ice cream back when I worked in an ice cream cafe. Perfect autumn pick-me-up.

Today I cut my hair, and now I'm filled with palpable sentiments of loathing and regret.

Dannihilator 05-31-13 08:26 PM

Today I rode 52 miles in this wonderful heat, no problems though....

SpeshulEd 05-31-13 09:03 PM

Today I missed 1000km in the May Massive by 2km. :(

On the upside, I'm buying new wheels!

Dannihilator 05-31-13 09:10 PM

Ouch.

SpeshulEd 05-31-13 09:19 PM

Picking up the reynolds in the road bike marketplace. I get my 1/2 year bonus in a month, spending some of it early.

You'll get over it. I used to have hair almost down to my waist. Cut it back about 25 years ago and survived somehow.

Riding a USS bent was some of the most fun bike riding I've ever done. But stairs. Ugg.

Today I had steak for the first time in a long time, I can't remember when I last had one. Cooked rare for the first time too and I enjoyed it. Why haven't I done this before? Oh yeah, I used to be an extremely picky eater. fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuu
