interesting. I would think torn up bars would get pretty annoying after even just a few miles?

Riding up Balboa Ave in this heat was pretty miserable.

huh... now it's raining.

Why couldn't it have rained on me when I went up that climb?

Balboa isn't that bad, but I assume you mean the part between in-n-out and home depot in this heat would indeed suck although plenty bearable.

Some sort of environmental conservation or remediation research.

Today I got my upgrade from cat 5 to 4 for the track...even though there are two race days left.

Bikes: Not As Many As I'd Like

Good friend I work with sent me a text about 12:30 AM. His fiancee that he has a kid with is trying to leave him.

Immediately biked the ~3 miles to his house, spent a few hours with him then rolled home in the rain.

Good rides, rough situation.

About the exact same time I did pretty much the same thing but spent a few hours with tacos and beer. 11 mile round trip every Tuesday always worth it.

Rode into work despite feeling like I may be coming down with a cold. I'm probably going to regret that later when I have to ride home.

Maybe it's just allergies. Today I woke up with one of those traditional fall allergy headaches. Yay!

Good call, I was just thinking it may actually be allergies. I have the low grade headache as well. Off to druggist.

i usually only have early spring allergies that are so bad i can wake up with my eyes swollen shut and cemented with gunk.

this year they didnt bother me at all until the past 3 weeks, itching eyes, sneezing, runny nose, migrane inducing congestion.

ive never had an allergy problem in the fall or any time other than the first 6 weeks of spring, and a lot of people that dont usually have allergies have been complaining to me and im just like, welcome to my hell.

I used to have "allergies" on Mondays...usually if it snowed that weekend.

I think the first part of Balboa, between highway 5/mission blvd (at the bottom) and Clairemont drive is pretty horrible, mostly due to a combination of factors. The length and gradient, which aren't too bad, are only part of the equation:

Wide open, exposed
Fast Traffic w narrow-ish lanes and bike lane
Boring, graded road w little to no changes in direction or gradient
Trash,
Vagrants walking up and down,
makes for a pretty miserable few minutes.

I would much, much rather climb something like Torrey Pines than Balboa Ave, although that doesn't say a lot. I'd rather climb most roads, even much steeper ones, then Balboa.

Unfortunately, I ride up Balboa all the time, as my apt is in the Mesa College/Clairemont area and I ride to Fiesta Island or up the coast a lot.

another bummer is that for some reason the coastal winds and breezes don't usually hit the lower half of the climb as much, which means there is no ventilation and your HR just gets jacked in the heat. also it is kinda steep.

I guess that part balances out the good of riding thru the rose canyon path.
You can always skip that part altogether by cutting thru UCSD and riding along Genesee instead.

Today I started fully going to bike withdrawal. It's been a week since I've been hit and I still don't have a new front wheel. On the bright side, I've been skating more.

Haha that's not too bad; sometimes I see a cyclist riding on the road while I'm in the car or walking on the sidewalk, I would be like "darn, I wish I was him/ her"

Ordered a grey Bonetto Cinturini rubber strap for the work watch cause the nato kept skinking up too quick. I have to wash my hands often throughout the day it was always damp.
