Sunlight really does a number on them. I've found that occasionally wiping the sidewalls down with Pedro's Bike Lust makes them last considerably longer.
I guess this works on similarly susceptible gatorskin sidewalls as well? :D |
I hate walking into a bike shop and seeing tires lined up, hanging up high in the front window, baking in the sun. There are a couple shops like that here.
Scrod, when did you move out to San Diego? The guy who started/owns Spin Cycles here in Cleveland, Greg, relocated to the Boston area about 4 years ago, was wondering if you knew him, or met him ever. |
I got in 33 fixed gear miles yesterday in 39°F warmth. It was nice to know all that is wet was water. Today I am in the path of the Nor'easter that is bearing down on the mid-Atlantic area. I am afraid yesterday was the last ride for a bit. At least the last ride on the track bike.

So awhile back I posted how philwood cogs are no-go's w/ the izumi super toughness-V if you don't want excessive chain noise. On a whim, I emailed philwood support over this issue regarding how their machined cog (with the notches) teeth mesh with chains vs its competitors and they sent me this reply:
Our cogs are made to specific tolerances that we stand by, so by running a stiff chain with no flexibility to it, it can create some noise, so lets say you run a less expensive production run cog these can be undersized giving more move ability for the chain. So by running our cog, it is best to run a high quality chain but still have some flexibility to the chain, the other thing is to confirm you chain line is correct. The best chain we seen was the Gusset espresso chain, not sure if this available any more, the other chain we liked was the Izumi V-Super Toughness Track chain, that is if you are running the 1/8 inch size chain. We hope some of this info was helpful to you. I also asked what chain they suggest and to my surprise they suggested the exact chain I had tried running it with with dastardly results. And the other chain they mention is pretty obscure over on this side of the globe. |

May have convinced my long-time best friend to drive our vehicle for RAGBRAI. I keep trying to give him every out possible but he says he's totally on board. That haul back from Davenport is gonna suck.

Why do you even care about the aluminum material hardness ? The bearing races are going to be made of steel anyway. Frankly, the only readon to spend a ton of money on CK stuff is that it comes in a lot of different kool kolors.

On a separate and far more relevant topic, today the weather down here was absolutely awesome, mid to upper 70s, clear sunny sky, very light to calm winds, low humidity. Since I'm retired and don't have to spend my life cooped up inside at some stupid job, I got to ride my Dolan Pre Cursa on a nice 30 mile country jaunt. I'd forgotten how nice this bike really rides, and how sporty it feels. :D
