Today my brother did the "Gran Fondo Ocean to Ocean" in Panama on a fatbike ( @Mumonkan style). Not surprisingly, the only fatbike there.

stage 3 TdM, circuit race, (46mi) cat 3: pack finish
Teammates got 3 from a break (of 3) and 4th in the field sprint. I did a lot of work during the race covering moves from people trying to bridge to the breakaway, or pulling our protected rider near the front (7th GC I think). On the last lap I worked hard on the back stretch with a couple others, just keeping it fast w him near the front. I moved out of the draft with two corners to go (~1.5k), and just drilled it (550w+) until the next corner and dropped off our GC guy with one teammate left, it was perfect. Apparently a couple moved around and pinched him in the last corner, but oh well, so it goes. Good race! We would have won the team competition but you needed 5 riders on all three days and we only had 4 on day 1. The best part of all three days was hanging with all the guys (and girls) after everyone's races - I've never had this much participation and involvement, it's great. Our new sponsor is Karl Strauss and so there was more than enough free beer, which can be too much if you're not careful :) |

I went to a memorial service for a friend who passed and then went to visit another friend in the hospital and the previous day I worked 10+ hours. Totally not depressing : ( Luckily I have the joy of relaxing and reading BF to get my spirits up. Talking about bikes always helps especially on the days I cannot ride or just don't want to ride or are generally depressed. It gets me amped on new projects or what cool shiz other folks have. |
Today I signed up for a dirt road/gravel race. Did it 5 years ago. Failed miserably. Was ill prepared from the bike to the rider. Thought I was the bombdiggity because I had been mountain biking a little. It's a dirt road, how hard can that be? 26" wheeled full suspension Specialized Camber. Blew myself up within the first mile and a half. Sucked wind the rest of the race and fell way back. Tried to keep up with a guy who was a much better rider overall and he left me before the second mile. There were photographers all over the place and they posted pictures online. I looked and looked and looked and finally found a picture of me,.....walking my bike up a hill. The hills for this one are pretty decent, at least for the state. But I was walking my bike, like a tool. That was the 22 mile race that I signed up for thinking it would be super easy.
I signed up for the 36 mile route which has much more climbing. After getting divorced in 2014, the riding has intensified. Not so much the mountain biking, but fixed and geared road riding. Longer distances, faster pace, learning how to pace myself more and not blow up. I recently picked up a Specialized TriCross Elite 2x10 for multiple uses, like commuting since it takes fenders, but my goal was to redo this race at some point. Well, why not now? Spring has been good to us so far, and the race is in the middle of April. My goal is to complete the 36 mile course in the time it took me 5 years ago to do the 22 mile course. I averaged a piss poor 11.1 mph that day, what an embarrassment to myself and the sport. Walking up hills, lollygagging, complaining about everything, what a sissy. I figure that if I can keep a good pace, not blow myself up, remain calm and collected, that I might be able to do it. Would be pushing it, but I think that it is entirely possible. |
When it comes to bike racing, it all comes downs to pacing yourself. Once you blow up, you usually won't get a real chance to recover.
Today, I put some 35c Kenda Kouriers on the Steamroller and changed up the ratio, it's like rolling on clouds now. Once I find a cheap 17degree stem and cut down some flatbars I have laying around, should be dialed in. |
Today I posted a new bike video with the Cartel:

You owe me 2 minutes.
|
I ain't even gonna click it.
|
Looks like Cartel bikes = typical steel fixay with no name parts. I have seen worse videos before. Definitely better ones out there, but it isn't that bad.
|
I rode Fri, Sat, and Sun this weekend. Success.
|
Snowing. Damnit.
