"Yeah, Ok, but why get a standard road bike when you could get something that can fit wider tires and ride off-road?"
"You mean like a cross bike?
"Yeah."
"You just built a SS cross bike, what's the point?"

...what am I doing with my life? :crash:

Geared cross bike + SS cross bike is a great way to live life. That said, I'd just look for a CAAD10.

Budget, sumdget. Just blow your money on something fun! Money is only fancy paper, that I could use way more of...You know what forget what I said, just give your money to me and I will put it towards a bike for you :p:p:p

Today I lusted after a roadbike for the first time. This CAAD12 is so damn beautiful.

It's nice and all, but the solid color frame/black everything else look is way boring IMO.

Still waiting for my first time. Sometimes I feel ashamed when the guys on here talk about all their experience. :o

This is the closest I’ve ever come:

I'd ride the crap out of either of the two bikes above.

The level top tube on the Cannondale is a refreshing touch of class.

The Squid is head turner and looks like a ton of fun.

I'm thinking of getting this:
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4738/...7ef5ed8d_b.jpg

Marin Nicasio, my LBS has one on close out. I'd be buying it basically for the frame and cockpit. I'd probably immediately upgrade the wheels to H Plus Son Hydras with decent hubs and could conceivably switch the dropouts to thru-axle(yay). It'll take fat road tires and the third bottle cage mount would be sweet for summer gravel rides. Ignore the cranks. Talk me out of this.

Exactly why I love it so much. I'm not a huge fan of the super loud graphics so many road bikes have.

motrheadsroadie 01-04-18 11:44 AM

that marin is nasty. id stay away. no point in buying a low end bike if youre gonna essentially upgrade everything right away. there are better bikes out there (both complete and frame/fork only) that check off those boxes youre looking for.
tbqh id stay away from that cannondale too. but thats just me.

LesterOfPuppets 01-04-18 11:47 AM

I wouldn't call the Nicasio nasty, but it's not great. If you can get a deal on a Breezer Inversion you'd be happier.

motrheadsroadie 01-04-18 11:53 AM

my vernacular.
i thought we were talking about geared bikes? that marin is a straight up sidestep from the cx bike youve got currently. the only difference is gonna be one has disc brakes and the other has cantis.

motrheadsroadie 01-04-18 11:56 AM

addendum.

that eddy merckx is fuego, YES. but needs an alloy 10/11spd campy group and some veloflex masters to be out of control.

Not going to happen lol. I like the disc brakes on there, and 3 water bottle cages would be amazing in super hot summers here in Atl. Never saw a bike with mounts for 3 bottles. Do those hplus sons wheels work with disc brakes?

You're right that it is a sidestep from my other bike but I kinda don't care. Also, I can convert this to geared bike by changing the dropout plate.

I was planning on building custom wheels anyway so yeah, you can lace them to anything you want.

motrheadsroadie 01-04-18 01:39 PM

does it have cablestops on the frame to run it geared when you switch the dropouts or do you have to ziptie cables to your frame?

its not my money, but, respect for wanting to support your lbs. i still wouldnt do it.

TimothyH 01-04-18 03:10 PM

Today I changed the air filters in my house. The difference was noticeable and immediate.

jtbadge 01-04-18 05:52 PM

I agree that the Marin you posted isn't really an improvement over what you have.

Tried out Record 10, didn't care for the ergonomics - I've gotta have Shimano, or even SRAM.

It's also had a 6800 and 9000 parts earlier in its life (that group is now on my Rock Lobster)

seau grateau 01-04-18 06:27 PM

I've only ever used Shimano, but probably gonna have to convert soon. The cranks on their newer groupsets are the most uggo things ever.

Today I wonder if anyone else feels guilty about how much they spend on cycling?
