I'm back down in San Diego which is my home. I graduated from HSU in 2010 and have been up twice to visit. I have a lifelong friend (from HSU/college and H.S. in San Diego) who is involved in "the industry" up there so I have reason to visit him sometimes.
Old Arcata is def. the long way around the block, for sure. Once you're past Redwood Acres and start going down the hill, it's ~8 mi to get into Sunnybrae/Arcata so it takes a bit. You're right about the dangers associated with backroads in general, but personally I'd rather take that flavor of risk than riding on the highway, which has it's own risks and frankly just kind of sucks. -Tmonk |
Right on man. Next time you're up to visit, try the new Waterfront trail. It goes from behind target to tydd street, alk thenway south to herrick avenue on the south end of town. it's nice.

Yeah, I've heard about that one, sounds nice. I think they're actually trying to build a separated bike path from Eureka (also by Target) to Arcata along the 101, in between the stand of Eucalyptus trees and the bay. That would be sweet, and would clearly be the way to go if it gets built up.
I follow the Lost Coast Outpost on facebook which keeps me somewhat informed about North Coast news. |
Rode a bit with a friend today, wanted to ride a bit more but ditched out before it started getting too dark/close to Crush Hour after mi amigo left.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ddef6ef8ab.jpg.2 miles off from the minimum I wanted, and I could have done that (and more) but I was discouraged when friend took off to ride home. Should have done the 2-3 miles to his house and then back to mine, but then I'd probably wanna make it 20 or something. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...b43ffd82c7.jpg Killer of Giants. |
Today I found out my wrist is fractured.
This probably happened when I crashed my bike about a month ago,* but it didn’t make itself known at all for the first several days. No pain, stiffness, swelling… not even a bruise. It started to become sore a couple weeks ago and gradually got worse. By early this week it was really bothering me, but I’m stubborn, so I didn’t want to go to a doctor. Instead, I just kept hoping it would take care of itself. Wednesday I told my wife I’d give it two more days and if it didn’t start feeling better I’d go have it checked. It’s good that I went in, because there’s a crack in my… ummm… something bone. I forgot what it’s called. According to the doc, this is not a really serious break, but it will heal much faster with some help. He put it in a temporary cast/splint thingamajig. I have an appointment with an orthopedic specialist next week, and I’m told I can probably expect to get an actual hard cast for six weeks, give or take. The silly part: right after I wrecked, I thought I had hurt my foot. It was very sore for a couple days. I treated it with some rest, ice, and elevation, and it soon cleared up. Obviously just a minor sprain. Then this stupid wrist thing came up. Makes me want to scream, à la Leslie Knope, “Crap on a spatula!” The worst part? It’s my right (dominant) hand. The next several weeks will be interesting. * I'm not 100% sure how/when it happened, but I did hit the pavement with my hand, among other body parts. I can’t think of anything else that’s happened lately to cause trauma to my hand/wrist, so that crash is most likey to blame. |
That sucks. I broke both bones in my arm, just below the wrist, in a skateboarding accident when I was a kid. It wasn't set perfectly, and I don't have quite as much range of motion in that wrist as the left. It also bothers me if I use a keyboard/mouse for a long time with the wrist at too much of an angle.
So take care of yourself! |

Bummer man. I too had fractured my wrist earlier this year when an elderly man T-boned me while on my motorcycle. I was doing 45mph at the time of impact and went flying through the air about 30ft according to witness accounts. Lots of road rash and fractured wrist. By all rights I probably should be a skid mark on the road, but got lucky I suppose. Glad to hear you will heal up well and quickly, stay safe!!! |

Hella clean road bike. Got some sort of risers right now, but I think I may work towards getting drops and hoods for it too. |

Today I'm consolidating separate photo, blog and bike route websites into one.
https://atlantabikerides.wordpress.com/ It's a ton of work and consolidation has only just started. Importing from blogger to wordpress breaks all the formatting and I'm having to go over everything word by word and learn a whole new interface. -Tim- |
