Sweet mod!
You should consider putting a buna o ring from ace hardware in between the light and the frame when you're screwing it on. It'll make it waterproof on the backend. :)

Good idea! Gonna do that for sure. I was gonna use clear RTV, but that’s even better.

Today the post man delivered my Sugino 75's. Gave them a quick orbital scotch bright followed by mother’s mag polish and did some engraving. I like this technique, it gives it a nice semi polished finish that matches well with most off the shelf ‘silver’ components. Heat treated some chainring bolts to help add to the color scheme I have going. I might end up eBaying pink ones idk yet. Ran to the LBS and picked up a pin spanner for the Hatta R9400 BB and slapped it all together! Left the chain a little long so that when my new chainring comes monday I can adjust accordingly. Really happy how everything is slowly coming together.

Tomorrow I’m helping my big brother (who is an amazing tattoo artist) machine a steering column for his ‘54 DeSoto... but after I’m hoping to have time to turn some dust covers out of titanium for the Sg75’s!

Oh yah! The guy who sold me the crankset / BB left these Shimano clipless and OG mks laminated leather straps on the crankset! Why he was running straps zip tied to clipless idk? But the kilo is definately getting the straps! https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...b139fb6a8.jpeg

It is a...get ready for it (sorry to appropriate another user's handle)...Trakhak :innocent:

But seriously folks - many racers at the velodrome do that due to the great amount of power they can put out on a track bike. It keeps their feet locked in really well - makes foot, shoe, and pedal contact doubly secure, and minimizes the risk of pulling a foot.

Nysss buy, and work - sorry to be nosy, but what is your day job? You could prolly make a nice side income selling your custom work to other bicyclists, or even a living if you really worked hard at it.

Keep up the good work...

I kind of figured that’s what the straps were for. Makes sense with the force some of those cyclists are exerting. Coming out of the clips would not be fun in any scenario, especially while racing lol.

I’m a machinist by trade. I sometimes do custom side work when the opportunity arises, but don’t advertise it much. My main focus these days is helping my father expand and strengthen our small, but highly skilled machine shop.

Thanks for the kind words!

I'm sure I could! You yourself seem pretty handy with leather ;)

mouse, man that looks great! Totally digging all the work you've posted pics of. That bike is gonna be a really cool, unique ride when you get it done. Thanks for sharing!

Today the co-op was almost broken into. It's the first time I've seen this happen since starting in 2009. Luckily no real damage was done.

Later in I picked up a couple 27" wheels. Wheels with 1st generation Phil Wood hubs. I want to rebuild these for my Schwinn so it's one step closer to being a true Eroica bike.

Dang! It’s unfortunate when crummy people try to hurt something like a bike kitchen, that’s so helpful to the community. I’m glad to hear they were unsuccessful.

Awsome score on the Phil hubs dude!!! Those are sweet! A new rear hub is on the upgrade list someday. I need to do some research and figure out what I actually want... and more importantly want to spend 😂

Death to thieves!
Also, those 1st gen phils will clean up real nice! It's awesome that Phil actively still supports them with spares. :)

Yeah, I see they have 1st gen listed on their site for replacement bearings. very cool. The ones there now still feel smooth through

I'm only going with these hubs because of how beefy the axle on the rear is. I've broken axles on freewheel hubs before and so I'm hoping the Phil will be tough enough.

Oh you should be good then.
I would at least repack the grease, especially if the bearings are the type with rubber seals that are easy to remove.

I've seen classic phil hubs with metal bearing seals like this though. Those are a PITA to work with and keep yourself from mangling in the removal process.

Yes they have rubber seals, I just gave to get the right tools to get them off without damage.

A thin needle inserted shallowly beneath the portion of the seal that's near the axle and not the race does the trick nicely. :)

Today I got to the shop later than I wanted and missed the post man. My shop isn’t on the best side of town so they obviously won’t leave the package at the door. So gotta wait till Wednesday to finish my build. Bleh!

I got that wheel laced up for the Kilo and wanted to true it. I was going to use the fork trick to true it up... but then got ambitious and decided to make a truing stand.

I started with some square tubing and cut the base legs and notched the arms to hold the axle. Then I welded it all up, I'm a terrible welder... but I think it will work! Tomorrow I'll throw some paint at it to prevent rusting and give it a go!

All in all it was a good New Year’s Eve... freezing cold shop, rainy weather, tons of gunshots, blasting electric wizard, getting a Henry Rollins podcast education, sober, single, and fabricating steel toys. Bring it 2019!!

And yes happy 2019 everybody!

I brought my bike to a bike shop for service for the first time ever (head tube ream/face and headset swap).

Last night I hit a pot hole with my road bike.

Not even going to complain about the roads. I was completely zoned out. 1800 lumens blazing like the sun and I rode right into it. Going fast too. Not too many pot holes where I live but I managed to find this one. Completely my fault.

Scared the hell out of me. I yelled a bad word. Handlebar rotated down about two inches and I thought the world was ending. Bottles went into the woods. Two flats. Haven't dismounted the tires but there doesn't appear to be any rim damage.

Walked home and took the fixed gear out instead. Had a blast. :)

Today I got the freewheel taken off my Kilo TT! Can't believe that thing was almost a half pound.

Heck yeah Dave! Those little suckers are quite bulky, and imo look ugly on the NDS.

I trued the rear wheel for my Kilo today with the truing stand I fabricated earlier this week!!!! I had never attempted it before, and am very happy I now know how to lace and true my own wheels. It's a task that seemed very daunting but really was not once I took the time to research and get hands on. I used a dial indicator to get it true within .010... or ten thousandths of an inch before looking online to see that the industry standard is way above that at 1mm. or .040 (forty thousandths of an inch.) COOL!!!!!
