50 miles solo on fixed Wabi. Averaged 16.5 mph. I'm old. I'm happy! Also happy to get the leg over the toptube but noticed the toptube is getting taller. :-(

johnnytheboy 06-03-17 09:53 PM

my buddy mat won dirty kanza today.

TMonk 06-04-17 04:13 PM

woah, that's big.

johnnytheboy 06-04-17 04:36 PM

yeah. super proud. he's the one that beat lance earlier this year in the gravel race in north texas. he's been a national crit champ before, but he's on another level the last couple years.

Carcosa 06-04-17 06:04 PM

Jeez. Any ideas on his time or average MPH? That race is bonkers.

Thanks! Suppose I could have googled it.

Humbling to think someone can crush 200 miles that quickly, and then you add in the gravel and elevation. :twitchy:

Edit: First single speed to finish at 33rd. First fat bike at 79.

On dirt....that is insane....

Today (yesterday) I was reminded just how easily I can spin-out riding 42x17 on smooth pavement when my wife decided she want to race (riding her Felt road bike) on the bike trail last night.

johnnytheboy 06-05-17 10:21 AM

today i realized i have a 10sp apex shifter set. so i'm gonna put that on the space horse.

Went to track, felt like absolute garbage. Cracked during the first workout, totally shut down after an hour. I'm probably not going to touch a bike for the rest of the week.

I really love the squishy bounce of the springs on my antique Troxel seat but it makes me wonder about the tire pressure too often.

Today I decided to get started on a fun summer project.

I've already got 80% of what I need just lying around (well, technically speaking, 100%, but where's the fun in that), and picked this up to spark a little momentum:

Today I learned that aerobars on gravel racing bikes is a thing.

Apparently Matt Stephens used them at DK and credited his win in part to their use. The 1 and 2 place finishers at LandRun also used triathlon aerobars.

I think it's somewhere around 15 MPH where CdA (drag coefficient) starts to become a bigger speed limiter than mass, at a given power output. So if you're riding on gravel at or over 15 MPH, aerobars would help.

Seems a little janky, but hey whatever works

johnnytheboy 06-06-17 02:48 PM

mat got a pinch flat at chainring massacre and was able to pull back up to the group (which included lance armstrong) and ended up winning that race. dude is a beast. he also ran aerobars in that race.

jtbadge 06-06-17 03:29 PM

Aerobars have been a fixture at DK for years. The wind can be brutal out there, especially riding alone. Anything helps.

Nico rode aerobars on his NB853 this year.

One of my favorites :thumb:

The vise clamp marks on the top give it character LOL

On a random note, that seatpost's range of frontal adjustment is not favorable for frames with a high degree of positive sloping top tube.

Started building up the Macho Man.
