Newbie building up Trek
Newbie looking to build up this Trek Elance 400 that I got at a garage sale. Looking to go all black with everything. Looking at a wheelset at the moment. Mavic Open pro, and then onto a crankset. There is a BB with the frame and it looks a bit longer than usual. Anyway, just joined, Thanks in advance for any info.

Just trying to get info on parts and or reviews from others. As I get further into the project and start to narrow down the possible components I figure it would be nice to get others input as far as quality/weight and $$

There are a lot of cranksets on the market. If you want to use that bottom bracket, you're going to need to know the spindle length and type. (guessing will cost you money)

unless you have a big box of bike components laying around, your build will cost you only what you're willing to spend.
If you wanna go really cheap, you can. if you want to build a high performance lightweight racer thats possible too (maybe not w/that frameset).
establish a baseline budget.
add $200.
start getting your parts together.
dont forget things like, a helmet, tools/seatbag, pump, tail light, water bottles/cages, gloves, shorts/bibs, high quality lock...

Spend a little time reading the forum, looking at what people are using and doing a little research. Nobody is going to provide you with an instant definitive answer regarding what you should buy.

The OP hasn't even stated what type of build is intended. Fixed gear, single speed, geared ? Those rear dropouts are very short and offer very little room for chain tension adjustment for a FG or SS. It could become complicated and expensive, especially for a FG build.

This thread is lame. It is essentially just a build thread. I think that OP thinks that eventually he will add posts to it going "Hey, I'm thinking about putting Omniums on there, can I use it with my current BB?", and then we will be able to tell him something but in the meantime he wants to save his spot because his frame is so riveting.
If the build goes as well as his first post, it will be an utter disaster.

Thanks for the kind words and inspiration there Proof...really helpful there. As far as the BB goes, it is a 68mm square taper, 127 mm long, so with that I am guessing that would be a little long? And as this is the FG/SS section I plan on building it up as fixed. Also I was not attempting to save a spot, just looking for a direction of where to start...riveting... I know.

BBs aren't a big deal Spokes. They aren't expensive and your lbs will be able to find one that does the job - one of mine has a decent supply and just uses trial and error.
prooftheory, what's wrong with a build thread? Oh that's right, they aren't cool enough for this forum. Give the bloke a chance and let him talk about his bike, it makes a change from "which colour should I buy my KiloTT in".
