Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

A great list from BostonFixed.
Thanks.
You can get screened tarps
https://www.mec.ca/Products/product_d...=1111275607775

or standalone screens for use with a tarp

I have a very small one that just fits over the top of the sleeping bag. Works very well with a tarp.

Bikes: 2 roadies, 7 fixed-gears, 1 hardtail, 1 full suspension mtb, and 1 hybrid...so far.

There's a guy who posts on Bicycling.com's Long Distance forum that rode across Canada, did the RM1200, BMB 1200 and the last PBP (in 67 hours) on a ss/fixed gear.

I looked at that tent the other day at EMS here in boston, and it is really nice. Small and expensive, but also light and nice.
I think it was priced at about USD$215.

At the risk of swamping the thread with MEC links, here's a nice little blurb on the camping gear weight reduction

One tip I find useful is planning for a smaller bag than you plan to actually use. You'll always find something to stick in the bag if you have room.

Just the thread I was looking for.

Some friends of mine are going to be homeless for the last week june, and ride from philly to the shore, and trek it up and down the coast, sleeping where we can. Being as this is our first real long trip, I was wondering a couple things. I'm sure there is something I am over-looking so what do I ABSOLUTELY need to bring? Tubes, tools, etc. I just want to make sure that I have it all.

Second, I was thinking about buying a handlebar bag, but from what I hear most are crap (without the out european front racks) and I am not sure how they would string on my bull horns ... any advice?

cheers!

battles,

just bring a blanket and bivysack....you can camp out on the beach; but be discrete because the police patrol and may give you a hassle if youre out in the open. You can even ditch the bivy if you dont mind sharing the underside of the boardwalk with the local homeless population.

You dont need a whole lot of spares; most of the shore communities have some local bike shops in the event of failure.

Get a small carradice like the junior or barley for your handlebar bag...really a saddlebag but they'll work.

i just made a really simple website for the tour my friend and i made last summer, from nyc-sf
im in italy now, without my sketchbook from the trip so details are kinda fuzzy.
it a work in progress so click thru the pages - 83 of them to see different sites across the country.

https://www.jamesmulry.com/cc04/

i didnt put any stuff like equipment lists or mileage yet.
its just images and a few stories.
just know i rode 44x17 with a 20tooth freewheel on the flipside
one front brake
over 100 miles a day once past pittsburgh

this summer its roma-ireland, by way of slovenia, austria, czech, germany, netherlands, belgium, and france, on this bike. (https://bikecult.com/works/archive/05...jcoastTKJ.html)

Bikes: All of them

Wow, such an awesome thread, but no updates in almost 8 years!? Time to revive this... I am just getting into fixed touring. Did my first weekend trip a couple weekends ago and am hooked. SF -> Pescadero, camped there, ~10 miles of fun and easy trails to Berry Creek falls the next morning, and then back to SF via a different route. Just mounted a better rack (Blackburn TRX-1) and panniers (Ortlieb Bike Packer Plus set) and starting to plan my next, longer adventure...
