Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Forgive me, fixers, for I have sinned..

And I'm enjoying the hell out of it.

The red frankenbike, which once had moustache bars, slicks, and a track cog, now has a freewheel, fat knobbies, and riser bars. It's a different ride, but this week it's just what I needed.

The transition - I started with

and ended up with

There's just something about bombing curbs, stairs, and whatever else comes my way that I'd missed. Maybe the next step will be to put a set of big apples on the fixed wheels and see how that treats me.

I like the red. You should at least bring those red brakes back.

The red brakes kinda blew. On the back, I'd catch my heel on 'em. On the front, I just wasn't impressed with the stopping power.

The bars? They're sticking around for the next possible transformation. (They're not nitto moustaches, anyway. They're some weird 3TTT city bar.)

The frame? It's a "velo-city". My old boss from the bike shop showed up at my house with it in the back of his station wagon, and told me I needed it. He was right.

You know what that bike needs? Some drop bars, ala rivendell/bridgestone. WTB Dirt Drops or flared CX bars would work and look great on that bike.

I don't like the dirt drops much - I've got a pair of the specialized knockoffs hanging around, but they just don't work for me.

The steer-tube extender thing was a bit necessary - my steerer tube was cut too short, but this kludge just about works.

Oh, aesthetically it's a nightmare. Feels great, though.

This has to be the most phony confession since Jimmy Swaggart. He only 'fessed up because he got caught with his pants down.

Good Job

No need to confess or feel bad - it's a Singlespeed & Fixed Gear Forum.

Good looking bike!

I recently flipped my flop hub. It was nice to be able to coast, not because I wanted to, but because I felt much safer. If only someone would develop a freewheel with a lockout...yeah, I know, it's kinda silly but I would like to have the ability to "lock in" when I'm on the bike path or in an area that is relatively safer than the first part of my ride which is the most dangerous for fixies (the 'burbs) and then have the ability to coast when needed.

do you have a brake? i don't see how a fixed with a front brake is less safe then a freewheel? i think the you need to figure out how to flip the lockout on your perception...cause realistically..you can brake the same.. or better

I'm referring to when you get in bumpy terrain or around traffic (especially near curbs), etc. Maybe it's just me, but my instinct is to coast and get slightly out of the saddle when things get a little hairy...like when someone jumps out in front of you, for example.

Well, it's fixed again. 38x15, big fat slicks. This thing's like some sort of unstoppable steamroller now.
