Got the CycleOps Magneto and like it a lot. I find I can squeeze more resistance out of it if I simulate low cadence/high intensity hill climbs right after high cadence speed work. It's great if you just want to climb on and shut your mind down.

It feels like there is a lot of vibration at speed, but it is supposedly less then wind trainers. I live in an apt. so I put a piece of plywood under the training mat. Got the front block since my neck was killing me without it.

I'd try a lot if you can. I think a lot of the satisfaction comes from your personal feel/needs.

Drat! I should have responded for you. I must have been the first one to see it when it popped up. I'll keep my eyes peeled.

There was another fluid trainer up there earlier today, you should check craigslist periodically...

Eh, just get a brand new CycleOps Magneto for $160. https://www.performancebike.com/shop/....cfm?sku=15701
Plus with a new one you get $30 Chris Carmichael training video that most CL sellers don't have.

does the mag have just as much resistance as the fluid?

@15mph, Mag about 200watts, Magneto about 210watts, Fluid2 about 160watts.

@20mph, Mag about 280watts, Magneto about 350watts, Fluid2 about 325watts.

@25mph, Mag about 350watts, Magneto about 450watts, Fluid2 about 600watts.

The Fluid2 is definitely more exponential, Mag is linear, Magneto is kind of a hybrid.

this is ****ing confusing, so the fatser you go the the morre resistance it (fluid)puts out? Pardon my ignorance but i'm scientificly challenged

Yeah, it's suppose to simulate wind resistance, i.e. the faster you go the harder it is to push the air aside.

get a freewheel for a single speed, spin it on backwards and have at it.

Well, let's break it down a little. What is your focus? From the above it seems to be about generating rpms. So you want to train at a high cadence, let's say above 100rpms, maybe 120+rpms.

Gold Sprints are distance events (or timed events?) where there is a set distance (let's say 300 meters) and the object is to do it in the fastest time. So, you need explosiveness (instanteous power) with high spin (fluid cadence) with a bit of endurance to sustain max power for all 300 meters (or whatever distance).

A trainer that let's you spin high but gives enough resistance to increase power is what you need.

Let's think about the power resistance of the various trainers listed by BlastRadius. On average, the AVERAGE rec rider will generate maybe 250 watts. The AVERAGE weekend roadie will generate 350 watts. The average world class climber on a mountain stage in the TDF will average 450 watts, and the elite riders like Miguel Indurain or Lance Armstrong will generate 500+ watts (or more in a time trial). Pettachi (the best road sprinter) or Theo Bos (one of the best track sprinters) will generate something crazy like close to 2000 watts during the last 100 meters of a race at speeds of 67kmh.

You need to consider your ability, strength and max potential. An exponential fluid trainer might offer too much resistance at high revolutions to be beneficial to your goals. (Notice that the Fluid2 goes from 160 watts @ 15mph to 600 watts at 25mph. At 15mph you are spinning a 42/17? mid sixties gear ratio at 90-100rpms. At 25mph you are spinning a 53/15 mid nineties gear ratio at 90-100rpms.)

I don't know enough about gold sprints to get more detailed. But if I were you:

I would get an idea at what kid of trainer/rollers are used at these events.

I would get an idea of what kind of gear ratios/chainring combos are used. ( Can you use your own bike?)

Let's say people use a common 48/17 mid seventies gear ratio or 48/15 mid eighties gear ratios for these events. Set up you trainer to target these ratios so you can spin at a fast, but controlled cadence, at max *sustainable* power for the target distance. Now, what is you max sustainable power???

We can get all geeky/scientifc here and talk about heart rate, lactate threshold, yada yada. But, this might be too much information.

I would think using one of your geared bikes with one of the mag (or magneto, if you want to get fancy) trainers will give you enough resistance to develop aerobic capacity at low speeds, but won't be a bear to spin at high speeds when you want to work on explosive power. And with your geared bike you can still control the resistance by changing gears. I would rather be able to control my resistance than be at the mercy of my mag trainer. (Also, you are training for a controlled stationary event, probably indoors, not for a road stage event, so what do you care whether your trainer can simulate "road conditions.")

sorry for the long winded response. And I'm sure some will disagree, but whatever... best of luck!

edit: replace "gear ratio" with "gear inches"

Nice response, Jose R. So Nyrie, with your 43/15 you would be doing about 18mph at 80rpm. So about 250-270 watts with the 3 Cycle-Ops trainers listed.

what about this one:
MINOURA MAG-850 WHEEL TRAINER
manual or remote $118.95

i used to cycle 10miles daily and going back into training. couldn't i use this one instead of the magneto because i don't want that much resistance in the beginning
