Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I need help

I'm going to keep this short and to the point...

I'm having trouble choosing a bike, as there are so many options.

I'm sick of looking at craigslist, but it seems like there is so much to know, and you guys seem knowledgeable, so please just tell me what to do.

I want a single speed bike for around $300-$400.

Do you guys recommend just getting something off bikes direct?

I don't want anything too fancy or trendy looking just something like a basic decent single speed bike.

I have looked at so many bikes I'm dizzy, I almost just bought a state bike (Blue Steel | State Bicycle Co.) because it sounded like chromoly was better than hi-ten steel (Speedster - Urban - Bikes | Schwinn Bicycles) or this one which I really think suits me https://www.fujibikes.com/bike/details/declaration

Are there any specific single speed bikes you guys think would be good to just get? (in the $300-$400) range.

Thanks.

Bikes: Bike Count: Rising.

Are you mechanically sound? If so, bikes direct may be your best bet.

That Schwinn is way over priced and it's a THREE speed.

Eighth Inch Scrambler- complete bike for $299.50, or custom for $459.50.

Keep reading this forum and learn all that you care to about fixed gear bikes. Be patient and continue looking on craigslist etc. Don't just grab something that you don't 100% want just to have a bike.

Bikes direct is great if you or someone in your household is mechanically inclined. If so- my recommendation is the fantom cross uno or the kilo wt

If not, I highly recommend buying from, and thus establishing a good relationship with, a good local bicycle shop. If one nearby you sells Fuji and has nice people there, then you're set! That fuji looks far better than the other two. If none sell fuji, dont fret, any shop with personable and skilled employees probably also sells some comparable cromo singlespeed.

Thanks, I ended up going with the Schwinn cutter from my local bike shop, they had a labor day sale and I already rented a bike for the day for $50 so they let that just go towards the bike.

You can never go wrong with a State Bicycle Co. ride.
