As far as pedal retention, I really dislike the bmx pedal/velcro strap setup. I find that I push my foot forward on the pedal and it just wedges my foot into the strap until the pressure is uncomfortably noticeable. Plus, I think they are more awkward to get into than toe clips. I much prefer conventional toe straps and steel toe clips. Double straps are super nice on a fixed gear.

If you're looking for the "ultimate" in marginal performance gains then clipless are great. But not everyone wants to waddle around in cleated/clippless shoes, especially on errands, grocery runs, bar hops, going into work, visiting a friend, etc. Carrying around an extra pair of shoes (or buying a special pair) doesn't really count as a solution to me.

To each his own.
I find that the BMX pedal/velcro strap combo much easier and more comfortable than clips and straps. The wider contact area of the strap on the top of your foot feels more secure to me. Never had any discomfort. Also you get slightly more clearance without toe clips and don't have toe clips catch on ground when walking the bike or scuff the front of your shoes. Very easy and quick to adjust to whatever you might be wearing on your feet. I can see how they don't look as classic as clips and straps but for function, think they are way better.

My LBS has "Power Grips" straps.
Mounted at an angle across the pedal, you insert your foot and when you straighten your foot it effectively makes the straps tighter.
That seems ok.
I tried two different BMX Straps...gave me good leverage if I jammed my foot forward but not when keeping the balls of my feet on the pedals.
Im finding that with more practice I am able to tighten my straps down and still get in and out of them ok

I really like these old Bikeage straps that are unfortunately no longer made. I can even use them with flipflop sandals, which would be a no-go with metal clips and straps. They are quite easy to enter / exit and will work with any shoes to provide very good foot retention.
