bumpin' it for the last time...
thank you ALL for your generous contributions and support: dcc, cavit8, dolface, wk, iro tony for many bike parts and the backup bike, kogswell for the bike, thylacine, and so many more...i got tons of support and donations from bikeforums, it was awesome! (hella - next year!)
so now for the ride report: this was my first multi-day ride and i am NOT a strong rider. the unsolicited advice that follows is for those of you in the same boat.
- first of all, i have to say i now believe in coasting. i am not convinced of gears yet, but coasting is good. i really tried to ride fixed the whole time, but it was more important for me to enjoy the ride than to curse up every single hill. again, i am not a strong rider! i rode fixed with ss on the flop side. while chicago is flat, i did change to ss on the later half of the first day. the coasting was just such a good break and allowed me to stretch out and change positions, something very appreciated in my 70th mile.
- i made the mistake of changing my gearing too close to the date of the ride and i wasnt used to it. i rode 46-16 fixed, 46-17 ss. if i was more used to it, i probably could have gone fixed the whole way. there are lots of hills in wisconsin. i did not like them. i probably walked more than rode the 2nd morning due to bad gearing.
-i rode an old trek 520 with touring geometry and 32 wheels. i loved it, it rolled like a craptastic cadillac.
- started out with a camelbak and ditched it quickly. i was too lazy to put a bag on the rack. i had a frame pack and that was fine.
-use the bike shorts and chamois butter. bring the zinc oxide ointment just in case.
- 200 miles is a whole lotta pedalling. my motivation was torrin, terror's thefge, and twinkies.
- i probably rode about 12mph. most rode between 10-15 mph. one large group rode at about 18-22mph (they were pretty hardcore roadies) hiv+ riders, and people on walmart bikes with platform pedals passed me by.....i just kept going slow and steady. good thing i have a very healthy ego.
- if you do a charity ride, do an AIDS one! they usually have lots of gay people, and we all know gay people are more fun! i think most cyclists (roadies) are kinda prissy...gay cyclists take it to a whole new level. think 'queer eye' on wheels! they also had the chicago's gay adult cheerleading team come out. if you ever get the chance, you HAVE to see them, it was highly entertaining in so many ways! by the way, i think i found a whole new market for the torrin calendar...
it was great. if you ever get the chance to do a charity ride, go for it. everyone had very personal reasons for riding. funny thing is, when i told them about torrin, lots of people broke down for him. cyclists really are a community, and bikeforums is a wonderful example.
thanks again!

Torrin for better or worse, let the driver know that he didnt appreciate being cut off, that is by no means grounds to run him off the road, and the driver's attorney trying to use his prior run-ins with other motorists to link him to being a "bad" biker is totally irrational. As far as I am concerned Torrin could have taken a dump on that dudes car and it still wouldn't be grounds for him to be run off the road and potentially killed. Support your fellow bikers... Torrin is temporarly blind, how's that driver doing, I am sure that middle finger didn't leave a mark...

No... idiot.. your not getting the point. the point is.. that torrin is a true lying, exaggerating, oppurtunist!!! I bet the true story isnt as bad as torrin has made. its fake my friends.. he's just out to get money and if you send money to him you are a sucker. and the hole idea of share the road is lost by people like this. It makes me upset. Torrin is obviously not practicing safe riding. he gives us cyclists a true bad rep.

Given the legal proceedings, the ease of mining
information from the internet, and the precedent
being set of the attorney's reading posts here
I would caution everyone about what they post
about this situation.
