Did You Ride Today?
#1076
I rode a mountain bike on a cyclocross course my friend Greg excavated on his property. We actually rode it together for about 45 minutes and he bailed when it started to rain. I ended up jumping out onto the paved roads for another 35 minutes.

Made my son get up this morning and go for a ride. I have to drag him away from the video/computer screens once in a while! We rode my usual 22.4 miles again, the longest he has ridden in a couple years. He's 12 and in good shape, so it didn't bother him. I am trying to get him to ride the length of the trail with me this fall, we'll see!
I don't really try for speed, I just enjoy being out there. I used to average 14-15 mph, now I seem to be in the mid-13's. I do keep a fairly high cadence, so I am getting some good exercise, which is why I am out there in the first place. It would be nice to be able to keep up with some of the 65 year old guys though as I am only 45!
There is no such thing as a pathetic average MPH im opinion.

that's me Bob the past few rides I've though to myself "man, I suck"! it's been tough to get out on a bike this year due to recent adoption, wife's pregnancy and now birth of our newest addition 3 weeks ago. This time last year it was just me, Mrs and 1.5 year old, now it's Me, Mrs, 3 week old, 2.5 year old, 7 year old, & 11 year old. Much more complicated. I've got to get my butt in gear though, I've got a MS150 in October.

Rode my usual 22.4 miles again today, but this time I tried to be a little more focused on keeping my speed up. I was able to maintain a 15 mph average for the ride, which is the fastest I have ever done that distance. I'll probably pay for it tomorrow though, so I'll have to take it easy. Oh well, back to the 13.5 average!

I rode, but didn't use the computer to track the miles and time. Why? I just wanted to ride without that care tonight. The wife was at work, my son at camp, and my daughter at my parents, so it was just me, and I needed some time for myself without a care.
First I went to my favorite Chinese restaurant for dinner. Then I went to the National Cemetery to visit the grave of a friend who died in action in Iraq. I eased over to Waterfront Park and saw a friend of mine discussing art with his friends, which isn't really something I know much about. I then sat at the Common Ground, a coffee shop adjacent to the common ground, for an iced coffee and time on the iPod Touch for Facebook, Twitter, and email.
On the way home I stopped at Bi-Lo to pick up some snacks for tonight. I watched the Tour de France this morning and time trials are boring.

Did my normal 22.4 this morning, although after working hard yesterday I took it very easy this morning. I averaged a whopping 12.9 mph! Almost no one on the trail today, surprising as it was sunny, cool and beautiful.

Did my usual 13 mile "good morning" ride this morning. On the first stretch along Hwy 141 (very busy highway with a bike lane on the shoulder) I saw that one of "Johns Creek's Finest"* had stopped a cyclist on Wilson Road. The rider had a helmet, so I'm not sure what the stop was for. Illegal right turn? Running a stop light? Wrong color riding shorts?
It's good to see that our cops have nothing better to do on a Saturday morning than pull over cyclists. It's ironic in a way because not 5 minutes earlier I saw a pickup run a red light while I was waiting for a green.

I rode this morning, but it was a relatively short ride (11 miles). I've been super busy since April, and my riding has suffered, so last week I decided that under all but the most extraordinary circumstances (serious illness or injury) I'll cycle a minimum of ten miles every day. This morning I rode around southeast Atlanta (East Atlanta, Ormewood Park and Grant Park), into downtown, through the Old Fourth Ward, Inman Park, Candler Park, and back home. Not many miles, but it met my baseline, and it was wonderful cycling weather.

I didn't ride today, but that was because today was a recovery day. For the last few years I have wanted to ride the entire Withlacoochee Trail, but something always got in the way. Yesterday I went out expecting to ride down to Inverness and back, about 32 miles. Once I got down there I decided to keep going, so I called my wife and asked if she would pick me up wherever I ran out of gas. Well, to make a long story short, I rode all the way to the end at Trilby and then turned around and rode 6 miles back to Ridge Manor where my wife was waiting to pick me up. Total mileage was 52.4, my longest ride ever.
The biggest surprise was my average speed was 13.8 mph. I was still cruising along at 14-16 mph right up until the end. The biggest problem was that I didn't have anything to eat with me. I thought I could stop at the Istachatta General Store and get something, but found when I got there that it had gone out of business. Good thing I had plenty of water! Overall it was a great day and I finally have that monkey off my back!

Saturday, 50 miles on Skyline Drive starting a few miles south of Swift Run Gap. I got a very early start and pretty much had the road to myself until about 11 am. My longest (& hardest) ride of the season so far.

I've riden everyday since last monday, that makes today #9, and usually get in 36-60 miles a day which includes a 13 mile round trip commute. It helps when you work at a shop that has daily rides.
I don't normally ride on sundays, all about duration and intensity not religion, but this week I heard of a ride in Jax so I thought why not. My thoughts should have been why?
I rode 17 miles into town, waited 45 minutes for the silly little hipsters to finish their drinks and smokes at the bar before finally rolling out. This was considered the monthly women's ride, which seemed humourous in retrospect, but all were welcome. However, if you know riverside/5 points, most of the men were still women anyway.
I think I was one of 2-3 out of 20'ish riders that were wearing helmets, some kid took a tumble 'bout a block or two from the start, in the middle of a really disorganized group that was taking up most of the road (not just the lane), blocking intesections and hootin' 'n hollering the whole time.
I just couldn't take it anymore, I'm a vehicular cyclist who does his best to be consistant and predictable so I really didn't want to be associated with that chaos for very long, so off the front I went without looking back.
total of 'bout 40 miles at 17-18 mph ave on my fixie in the middle of the afternoon.

what awesome views! Too bad there isn't anything around here like that... middle TN is pretty flat. You've got to go several hours east to get to anything interesting. yet another thing that I miss about VT.
