well it's not to far to oro vista and the route sheet says its 14.5 miles to the start to oro vista. that's 14 less miles right there. and from the end of sierra hwy to the ralphs or to csun is about the same ~11 miles according to the route sheet. 87-14=73 miles i'm guessing.

or try this:
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

i'll trace the route and post the link for that soon.

Yes, I rode with Stan last week, have ridden with him since 1989. Tim and I go back more than 30 years. Tim was my best man at my wedding.

we could skip sand canyon and placerita and take soledad to sierra hwy to foothill on the way back

yeah john, are you in? i'm still a maybe

I'm not sure yet. I'm waiting to hear from the others. I'm not sure how many miles you would save by starting at Ralph's or if others might want to start there. I think vertical Bob would do it.

That Rose Bowl ride looks so nice but I'm not sure if I'm up to it yet. Got back on the bike Tuesday and although the shoulder is still a bit sore, I can ride with minimal discomfort. I might just do that 26 miler to ease myself back into it.

big john 10-06-06 07:54 PM

I'll be riding in the Santa Monicas tomorrow, not starting at CSUN. If anyone is interested, we are rolling from the Commons at 8:00.

VanceMac 10-06-06 08:16 PM

I'll be at CSUN tomorrow (and probably Sunday), but for future reference, what is "the commons"?

Thanks,
Vance

valleygirl 10-06-06 08:30 PM

The commons is the Calabasas Commons near the Corner Bakery in the parking lot. It is up the street from the meeting place of the Wed. ride . I'm not sure of the name of the street.

Commons: good to know. Is that an "every-saturday" ride? Diversity is good.

CSUN (sfvbc) tomorrow morning: if you see a black cinelli, say hi! I'm very shy. ;)

Vince (or anyone else), how was the Rose Bowl? On the Tarzana route, I was following someone who missed a turn and we ended up at the top of Reseda. Half way up, I was thinking "gee, they don't usually have the level 1 riders do climbs like this". But we forgave the leader, had a good trip down the hill, and our 6 person splinter group stayed pretty tight the whole way. The pace felt a tad slow for me, which is good because it means I didn't get that far out of shape. I'll probably do the Simi Valley 48 next weekend, which will tell me if I should still plan for Solvang or not.

Rose Bowl run was a lot of fun. One of the guys got a flat early on, and I hung back with him... we managed to catch the main group, but not after a wrong turn into griffith park (in which we even lost each other). I caught the main group (they took a short break, thankfully), but was totally spent just as the climbing was about to begin. Great strategy! It's a great ride, though... with a nice climb right in the middle. I ended with about 59mi.

yah, SFVBC is great!

You should come to the meetings....
and join us for dinner at Millie's beforehand
and come for the bike clinic before the meeting
Bring a good appetite because the refreshments are always outstanding!

As to the meetings, you could not find more excellent speakers. Last month an attorney and a physician spoke about drugs and professional athletics. Stuff you wouldn't hear anywhere else.

So come on out....

And, btw, it is okay to ride your bike to the meetings...

Barb Rowe 10-07-06 08:49 PM

Ralph's in sunland....

...is just west, on the north side of the street, of the 210 freeway SUNLAND BLVD. offramp.

Oro Vista is a perhaps 2-3 blocks east on sunland/foothill blvd (past sunland park).

There is a jack-in-the-box on the NW corner of Oro Vista and Foothill Blvd., at the signal. Turn left, ride a few blocks (north) and you will find that Oro Vista ultimately becomes big Tujunga Canyon Rd, which leads into the Angeles National Forest....

If you are parking the Ralph's parking lot, be sure to read the signs. It may be better to park in the area behind Raph's, near the pet store and the thrift store. A word of caution: a lot of businesses in this area threaten to tow the cars of non-customers who park in their lots. Not very friendly.

BTW, there is free parking in sunland park.

[I live here; can you tell?)

Have a great ride.

I got a flat 3mins from my house so I was late and missed everyone...

Bob said you guys had a nice ride, John. Wish I could have joined. He, Stan and I rode Big T yesterday. It was gorgeous and other than a little headwind in the canyon, a perfect ride. Bob told me he is pushing for Crysal Lake next Saturday...;)

By the way, how far east do the SFVBC rides go? Is the Rose Bowl the max?

Cali - look for a guy in all black cycling attire. At least that's what I've been told. :D

Sometimes our rides go to Pasadena or Sierra Madre, but not east of there.
Yes, we had a good time, up Old Topanga and down to Fernwood, up Fernwood and down Piuma, turned around and went back up Piuma and down Stunt. 5000 feet of climbing in 25 miles. From there we split up and Cathy and I went to the Sierra Creek store on Kanan and turned around and took Mulholland all the way back. Debbie is as strong as ever on the climbs and dropped the rest of us BIG TIME on Piuma.

Cassave 10-09-06 10:16 AM

I did the Rose Bowl ride with you guys Saturday. I was the one on what somebody called "the touring bike". It's just my commuter that grows a set of fenders this time of year. Fun ride. I'm looking forward to
a Santa Monica mtns ride. Do most of them start from the Commons, that's only about a mile from my house, very handy.
