The SFVBC thread

I've just started riding with San Fernando Valley Bicycle Club, and love it. I wasn't surprised by how friendly everyone is, but I was surprised by how big the club is. Numerous ride options every Saturday and Sunday, and unofficial (but well-attended) rides every Monday and Wednesday mornings. I think there were probably 50 people at the start on Saturday.

It is too bad their website doesn't have a message board. Anyway, I was just wondering if there were any other SFVBC folks here? I know UrbanKnight is in the group. Anyone else???

I am not a member, but have ridden with them a few times....

big john 10-03-06 05:32 PM

Been a member since 1989. Some Saturdays there are close to 200 people out there. A group of the regulars does remote start rides and other organized rides together. This weekend some are doing the MS ride. There will be some night mtb rides soon.

I am not a member but I have ridden with them numerous times as well. There are many friendly riders in that group, and many who split off and ride with other groups just like I do. Big John is a member, I think. But, yes, LARGE group!

Hi Vance, I was there on the Monday ride through Simi. SFVBC has a very active club membership , keep up the good work on the hills.

VanceMac 10-03-06 08:57 PM

Hey valleygirl, good to see you here. Are you going on the Wed ride tomorrow? I think I am going to give it a shot... I don't mind getting dropped. :)

My good friend Christy rides with SFVBC all the time!
I have ridden with them a couple of times.

zzzwillzzz 10-04-06 10:50 AM

VanceMac 10-04-06 11:17 AM

Will -- the tandem that was there today??? What a gorgeous day. We ended up in Malibu... way more climbing (and miles) than I had planned!

zzzwillzzz 10-04-06 08:59 PM

sundays we ride. the rest of the week i ride, so it wasn't us. and we don't do any climbing on the tandem but we're working on it.

VanceMac 10-04-06 10:54 PM

Anyone doing a sfvbc ride this weekend? The "Ring Around Rosebowl" on saturday and "Tour of 2 Topanga Tops" on Sunday look interesting.

ovoleg 10-05-06 12:44 AM

I ride with them but most sunday/sat mornings I have to work :(

I used to go out every week before I got a suck job like this...great group and very friendly. All sorts of ride skills!

They are two of the nicest people you could meet, everybody loves Christy.
Mill Creek is hard but if you've climbed Big T you know what to expect there, (9 mile climb), then left to Hidden Springs, (a couple miles of up and down), then a 7 mile climb to the summit. Drop down the other side to Acton and the rollers back to Newhall Pass. Not an easy ride, but not as hard as you might think.

Scootcore 10-05-06 05:49 PM

in all honesty it just sounds really long, not too terribley hard...next time perhaps as work has opted to be the cruel mistress i know she can be this weekend! i get to come in both days! woohoo!

Sorry you have to work, maybe we'll meet on a ride sometime.

valleygirl 10-05-06 05:59 PM

John are you planing on doing the Mill Creek summit? I wonder if it could be shorten by parking at the Ralphs and going around the mountain via Sierra Hyw. and then Foothill. Sounds long to me.

zzzwillzzz 10-05-06 06:24 PM

do you mean the ralphs near foothill and sunland? if so post it here so i will know. would the whole group start there or would you wait for riders that leave from csun?
we could skip sand canyon and placerita and take soledad to sierra hwy to foothill on the way back

yeah john, are you in? i'm still a maybe

yes the Ralphs near Foothill. I wonder how many miles that is , i need to look at a map. With a ride that long I don't think I would want to wait later than 8:00.
