Mid-November...absolutely unreal weather!

I agree, the weather is spectacular. I was spinning around a bit in the Santa Monica Mountains today. I keep thinking I am going to run into Big John but can never seem to spot him

Our Wednesday rides always end up in the Santa Monica Mts. Specifically (usually), Las Virgenes/Malibu Cny to Malibe and then back on Old/New Topanga. I know most people can't ride during the week, but thought I would mention it if you're availalbe...

That does sound good but I am in the category of not being available Wednesday during the day.

Anyone looking for a Thanksgiving day ride come to CSUN at 8:00 and ride to Big Tujunga. If you need to get back early you could drive to Foothill and Oro Vista and start there at 9:00, or start from Angeles Crest and Foothill and ride to Oro Vista by 9:00. The ride desends Angeles Crest. Should be a good group.

zzzwillzzz 11-20-06 12:44 AM

sorry about that, vance. it's his avatar that has his picture (i'm guessing) with a goatee and he lives in the valley as well.

i'll bring my whistle next time and snap you all into shape. the girls did a good job with the pace line, as for the rest of you, if you don't have anything nice to say... lol

i didn't want to say anything and jinx it (even though i'm not superstitious) about no one getting a flat and then i got one after 120 miles and about a half mile from home. i rode it home flat and came really close to crashing many times as the tire tried to come off the rim and i was too tired to fix it

Will, Caren was impressed by your leading in the hills, she had nothing but nice things to say.
Are you going to join us on Thursday? I will be starting from home and meeting the group at Foothill and Oro Vista. You could probably hook up with Stan and Vertical Bob, they will be starting near Valley College.

Have they finally finished the paving on the Crest ?

The section from Clear Creek to the bottom is done. They are working on the section from Red Box to Clear Creek.

How many miles approx is the ride from CSUN and back ? I may be interested ....

A.C. paving

We were up on the Crest yesterday with a bunch of 508 vets, whew. They have paved the downhill lane of A.C. from Upper Big T almost to Clear Creek and have done a beautiful job. Nothing on the uphill lane but I suspect that when they reach Claer Creek they will start back at the top and do the other lane. There was no ground up but unpaved area that I saw. V.B.

It's about 65 round trip from CSUN. If you start at Foothill and Oro Vista it's about 40. The group will be trying to leave Csun a little before 8:00 to get to those waiting at Oro Vista by 9:00. Join us!

I might come out for the ride but I dont want to slow the group down. Is this a no drop ride? Im not a fred but I'm not a trained climber either.

The ride sounds great so hopefully I can make it!

If you have done some climbing you should be O.K. as there isn't a ton of climbing on the ride. I can't speak for the people starting at CSUN except to say they are my friends and they always wait for me. Once we get to Big T it will be no-drop, for sure, and I am usually last.
Depending on where you live, you could start at CSUN or you could start at Foothill and Oro Vista with me and just do 40 miles. Vertical Bob and a couple others are starting in Van Nuys near Valley College.
The plan is to meet at Foothill and Oro Vista at 9:00.

Cassave 11-21-06 10:32 AM

You guys are killing me. It sounds like a great ride planned but I've gotta be in Culver City at noon.
I've got to pass. Have fun and happy T-day.

awiner 11-21-06 10:58 AM

Anyone venture to guess what kind of time frame the 65 miler from CSUN and back will be ?

Tough to say but I would guess by 1:00. Of course, there could be flats, etc. On the other hand, there could be hammering.

I can start from either location as I live fairly close. I have to be at "dinner" at 3:30 in Santa Monica so I should give my self an hour and 15 minutes to get home, chagne and get over the hill. So do you think the ride would finish by say 2pm?

Anyone know what kind of grades I will se going up the hill? I bet I sound like a big chicken but just trying to see if I should call the medivac chopper now or later!

I don't know your ability, so I really can't say how long these things will take, but I think the CSUN group will get back by 1:00. If you're worried or pressed for time drive to Foothill and Sunland and park at the Sizzler and meet us at the Jack-in-the-Box at Foothill and Oro Vista at 9:00. Not sure of the grades, but it's a 9 mile climb on Big T and it's not too steep.

Starting from the Valley College area at 8 we should be home by 12:30-1pm. at the latest since our regular bagel shop will be closed on the way back. V.B.

hopefully their opinion of you was not less while thinking you were me!

I might make it to this depending if I get out of helping my brother.

Last time I did this ride I rode from CSUN to the start location. I was actually doing pretty decently up to about 1/3 of the climb when I got a flat. After the flat I lost all my momentum and started riding like crap...Then my knee went out and I struggled the whole way. Had to ride back to CSUN also. I thought it was pretty challenging. I need to get some revenge on this :D
