The original perpetrators did just that. Risked the victims life over an IPOD. They have no conscience or any regard for human life. Why spare their's? They could have easily killed this person over an IPOD! It easily could have resulted in a serious crash and life threatening injury. When assaulted there is only one rule: SURVIVE The person is fortunate to have left with their life in tact - OVER AN IPOD!

In my life's experiences when attacked due what ever is necessary to neutralize the threat! WHATEVER!
That does not eliminate running or shooting the low life.

It happened there and could easily happen anywhere there are less traveled paths such as SART or any of the other trails throughout S. California. I got mugged in London one night and ended up chasing the guy down the street with the Saw Blade out on my Swiss Army Knife yelling at the mugger to remember OJ Simpson! He is very fortunate that he out ran me! If it had been here I would probably have been shot so there wouldn't have been much of a chase.

Things like this make me really ANGRY!

I can't tell if you guys are serious or not, but just in case, please don't ride with a gun.
If you bring a gun into a confrontation, your own odds of getting shot go up exponentially.
Take pepper spray.

Hmph! I think I will go read my book now.

All I'm saying, is don't point something that you don't want pointed back at you if things don't end up going your way. Maybe you think you are invincible and will always have the upper hand. Oh, well. That would only be concern for your safety.

But if you go around riding with your gun and let everybody know it, then maybe assaulters will not think of cyclists as easy prey and not attack. Or, they may just make sure they have a gun next time they attack a cyclist.

Carrying a gun isn't just about killing. In that situation a gun would've made the kids back off. The guy rides off safely and the kids learn a lesson. If they keep coming after a sidearm is drawn then I have no problem with the guy pulling the trigger.

Kim, you do make a valid point that everyone can evaluate. Your contribution is helpful.

As far as Ovoleg, just ignore him. He seems to be on a quest to get banned continuously. He will just become more and more insulting until he achieves his wish. Those that have put up with him for a while just ignore it and laugh it off. I just wanted to make sure you weren't influenced by ovoleg's posts, they really have nothing to do with the content.

The stats for that claim are based on junk science.

Oh, right on. And: RIGHT ON!

I'm not quite that size, but if I do run into them out there, we'll see what kind of damage a steel-frame and a backpack can do.

Appreciate the post!

+1 and I 100% agree with Kim. If I thought I had to carry a gun in my jersey, it would take the fun out of cycling. With that said, I have carried pepper spray (legally sold in CA) when out riding alone. I carry it in case I run into a rabid animal or rabid human. I'm not afraid to use it, but it would be in defense only and only so that I could get away and find help.

I tend to avoid them when alone. I figure that if I have a problem, I would rather be out on the road where someone in a car is likely to see me.

Guns are made for killing, that's their sole purpose. If you don't want to see anyone killed, then don't carry one. Would you really want to shoot a kid to death over an iPod? Worse yet, would you want that pack of kids stealing your gun and using it on you?

It's not science, it's basic math:

Zero guns in the situation = zero chance of a gun being used.

One or more guns in the situation = higher than zero chance of a gun being used.

(Higher than zero) divided by (zero) = infinity.

Infinity is way more than a geometric increase.

I don't normally ride them however as I was out with my wife and 13 year old just to play, we wanted a carless environment. Bike paths have their uses; you just have to deal with whatever comes. Kinda nice to be able to just go slow, amble around, stop, etc.

I suggest everyone just strap Ovoleg to the back of their bikes. He can pound your foes into submission at a moment's notice with no risk of putting a bullet into your own leg.

As sad and tragic as it may seem, I feel no pitty for anyone who willfully harms another person without just cause. If someone makes the CONSCIOUS DECISION to attack someone, any result is their problem. The victim did not make the choice, and if they feel they have to kill in order to survive, I'm all for the person who is not looking to harm others. Call it inhumane, but anyone who has no respect for human life should get no respect for his/her life. It's the golden rule, but they are using it in reverse.

That's junk science if I ever saw it. Besides, the victim can only control one part of the equasion. Here, I'll even prove you wrong with the same math.
If the thug carries a gun that is higher than zero.
Since (higher than zero) = infinity more chance of a gun being used, the odds of a gun being used are the same (infinity) as if both people carried a gun, or even if an army of people carried guns.
